Not sure I understand why people are worrying about HDD makes.

The bottom line is it's not for the unknowledgable to install the software on a new HDD. It maybe easy if there's a restore disk but the OP might not have one. Their data is probably lost anyway.

I don't understand why anyone would buy such a thing.

You have told us "you will sees a big difference in price", but that same drive, presumably with real labels, and a three year warranty, is available at lower prices elsewhere.
    Here are just two places:
    Una Technology

    Ballicom International

not the supplier i used. its been 5 years since i got out of doing PCs on a full time basis.

    the provider still sells unbranded

non it just shows the actual size of the drive and unbranded. unbranded HDD are usually low grade, just like own branded foodstuff. The will be made by the brands, but offered cheap. i can get a 320GB unbranded HDD and sell for £25 and get a small profit. I can even purchase unbranded half duplex sound cards for £1
  • Thanks for the advice everyone. Gonna have to suck it up and pay for the check.
Sorry if I came across a bit snotty, bad weekend with shoddy customer service from PC world...and I learnt something.
    Thanks again.
Have you tried turning it on and off again?
  • and I learnt something

Just to make this clear PC World have done nothing wrong.

Or perhaps they'd also have a grasp of consumer legislation and do exactly the same.
  • NO local independent who sold a laptop to a retail customer and remembered him would be in business if he tried to charge him £50 to "test it", there local reputation would not stand it.

PCcharm have that great a turnover , they don,t give a hoot about loosing a customer
