Just replace the hard drive, less hassle for you.0

The thing with off the shelf PCs/Laptops is that they are made with low grade components, as soon as the 1 year warranty is up i would have changed soundcards/graphics gards, memory etc. to better spec components. If PCworld did replace the HDD it would be a cheap unbranded model of HDD. so better off spending less on a good spec branded model and spend 10 mins to fit it yourself0

Reading between the lines a repair is that last thing the OP wants. It seems they're expecting something a bit better.
As for the laptops themselves, most are now made in China by a Company called Hannstar. They also make TV's and cheap monitors (Hanns.G for example) HP and Dell have most if not all of their rage manufacturer by them. They're cheap yes but not too bad considering. Not many companies manufacture hard drives so it WILL be a branded model.0 -

And then half an hour to install Windows.
And then an hour and a half to download and install all the updates.
And then an hour or so to install Office, updates and other programs.
And then further time to try and recover the data from the 'failed' hard drive.0 -

depends.
10 mins to install HDD and if you have a recovery disc then less than an hour to be back up and running.
I can replace a HDD in a PC and with all the discs available have it all up and running in about 90 minutes with all updates and software installed
PC world would just bin the old HDD and not even recover anything0 -

Rather a confusing description, wouldn't you say?
Is it really an unbranded Western Digital drive? How is that even possible?0
