Opinion on hairdresser charges

I find it interesting that the discussion here seems to consider a haircut as an item to buy, rather than the time spent with someone's specialised services. How much does the time spent in a hairdressers vary? Do more expensive salons take longer? If you are going to spend 10 minutes discussing styles or absorbing the atmosphere then it seems reasonable to pay for it - or pay less if what you want is simple and done in 5 minutes. I guess you would need to trust a hairdresser not to spin the job out, but a charging by time system might be interesting to explore. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

I charge upwards of £50 an hour...
My expertise needs to be reflected in the price. End of.Turn your car around.0 -
I only go twice a year cos i just can't justify the cost to myself it seems like so much money to spend just on myself.
I do appreciate that it reflects the service. On the rare occasions i go i pay about £40, but its a good salon and i feel pampered (the glass of wine helps :rotfl: ). I just don't like spending money on myself. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
WOW they sound good your lucky to have such barbers near you.I go to the barbers in the next village, it's run by a couple of Turkish brothers.
I get my hair cut, my goatee trimmed to perfection, eyebrows trimmed and the best wet shave I've ever had with an open razor. When they wrap your face in a wet towel that's so hot, it almost, but not quite scalds, it's a wonderfully relaxing feeling.
All this and a cup of the most wonderful Turkish coffee for £7.50.Britain is great but Manchester is greater0 -

A £5 home colour kit does does the same job as the hairdresser does, when she charges you £40.
Erm, actually it most certainly doesn't. Most of the box dyes that give apparently good results contain mineral salts which actually change the structure and colour of your hair permanently. I was sick of my salon colour fading and thought I was being clever dying my hair myself for years with a vibrant long lasting colour. That is until I asked my hairdresser to put some lighter streaks in. Neither of us has been able to get any test strands to lift at all. My only option is to grow the colour out which will take years.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
Well there's your answer OP, - come back as a man :rotfl:
Seriously, men's haircuts are far cheaper. I don't know why, - they don't require any less skill or time. Women's haircuts are an absolute rip-off. I'm guessing the salon the OP went to is somewhere like Toni&Guy, where haircuts start at around £40+
In our house the male cut tends to cost more than the female cut and colour. He goes to Toni and Guy in his lunch hour and I use a very good mobile service. Toni and Guy do a good job and his cut now needs to be done less often than when he had it done cheaply.
I agree that the OP should have been warned about the extra charge but glad she was pleased with the end result.
On the subject of £7.50 for a haircut I too can't see how that person is even earning minimum wage charging that amount. A 10 mile round trip (not a huge distance to travel) would eat up £4.50 of that sum in travel expenses then you've got the costs of replacement equipment, training to ensure skills are current, insurance and even when I just have my hair cut it takes at least 30 minutes for a cut and blow dry so they can't be earning minimum wage.
In my mind that means they aren't being paid a fair amount for their work and I would be offering to pay more even if that was what they asked.0 -
Shouldn't this thread be in the health and beauty section?
Why on earth is it on the family and relationship board.?0 -
I pay £15 for a cut & colour at my local college, & they make such a fuss of me. A cut's usually about a fiver, with layers & sometimes they do me a blow dry at no extra cost ..... The week before they break up you can at times get a £1 cut.
Oh & if you can all let me know where you get these expensive cuts, I'll know where to avoid going. Money saving you ain't! Although I did once go to an expensive salon (they charged £10 instead of £5 for a trim), I didn't find it to be any better than my usual one.0
