Opinion on hairdresser charges

When did you last get your hair cut?

If it was a while ago, then whatever style you thought you had would have grown out. I would be angry about an apparent "re-style" charge if I had been to another hairdresser in the last 10 weeks or so - however if I'd been less frequently, par for the course. With that said, it's really poor practice not to have warned you in advance.

I have long hair too so get mine cut very infrequently - I can get away with it. I've found a fabulous hairdresser who work for Supercuts of all places - the opening rate is something around £12, cheap as chips, but I end up paying around £30 because due to the length, it has to be washed, and it also takes longer. Am I unhappy with the price being so much higher than the rate on the posters outside? No, because my hairdresser always looks at my hair, asks me what I want doing, then tells me exactly how much she'll charge for doing that. Before she starts any work.

I know exactly how you feel about not wanting to cut your lovely long hair off - I always tell my hairdresser to keep as much of the length as she feels she can, but to hack away at whatever she thinks needs to come off, to keep it healthy and give it movement. It's always scary seeing how much hair ends up on the floor, but she's the professional, I'm not, and the end result is always fantastic. When you find a hairdresser you trust, it's really worth letting them do whatever they want to your hair - they have a better eye for it than you do!

I pay £45 for a haircut and in this part of London that's considered an ok price. I consider it normal because things are generally more expensive here. It's the only hairdresser I have found that actually listens to what I want and does it! So I don't mind paying it

Where is it?? I need one that listens!

So I had my hair cut today and my husband bought me some vouchers for a posh place in town which I've never been to before. I checked online and booked my appointment with a senior stylist which gave a price of £47.00. After I had my hair cut (which I was really pleased with!) They told me it was £57.00 to pay. I queried the price and was told I was charged extra for a 'restyle'. Now I have long hair and asked for my layers that started to grow out to be chopped back in, the rest was a trim because I can't part with too much of my hair.

I did pay it and was happy with the overall results but thinking about it after it does seem a bit crafty! My normal hairdresser doesn't charge more for adding layers and last time cut me a fringe and I still payed the same.

It's definitely cheeky to tell you after you've had your hair cut that it's £10 extra for a restyle, especially if you didn't even ask for, or know you were getting, a restyle! £57.00 for a haircut is an awful lot of money.

I have spent between 125 and 9.95 I loved the experience of the incredibly expensive salon visit as it was 4 hours, head massage, alcohol and a great hairstyle at the end of it. The girl who cuts my hair now does a good job and I colour it myself as it's very Adams family.
  • There's nowhere in my area that would charge anything near as low as £7.50 or £12 for a ladies cut and blow (and I live up North too!). In fact at such a low price I'd be questioning the qualifications and skill of the person doing the cut!

I wouldn't question the qualifications of a cheap hairdresser. It depends what you want and if they are up to date with current trends. I have a boring old-fashioned haircut (which I love!) and it can be done by anyone really.

The cheapest in my town is £12 for a stall in the market, or £13.95 at Supercuts or the 'granny' salon along the road. The market stall is really mobbed and stressy.

I pay £9-10 for a barber cut, even for a child. I was amazed when I got my son't hair cut on holiday for £3.50!

So the question of whether £47 is too much depends really. I wouldn't pay it, but in my town it's probably what you'd pay at a posh place as opposed to the cheap places I go.
  • No matter what the cost, I would expect to be told beforehand if there was going to be an extra charge for layers or whatever - even just a note on the website saying that restyles are extra.

I've never paid extra no matter what I wanted doing, but as I said above I go to the cheap places. Supercuts clearly state that their cheap price doesn't include a wash, is only available if you have washed your hair within 24 hours, etc. and that's ok, if you know the extras upfront you can decide what you want.
  • If I paid £47 for a hair cut, I would be expecting a decent head. And I would have it all weekend!

    Edit:
Boo Gar Me. Did not realise it was £57!

I wander into Supercuts once a year, maybe less. I've never paid their basic price, as they charge extra for everything, even drying your hair. It's over a year since I last went and it cost me about £30. They do always say upfront how much it'll be though. I need to get more organised because I can get a better cut in a salon for about the same price.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

It's been a couple of years since I had my hair cut and it cost me £8. I'm only in the chair for a short time so would begrudge some of these silly prices!

    I've been Money Tipped!
I t might be just me, but I resent paying an extra £50 for someone to use up my time by sitting at eye level fluffing up my hair, pouting in the mirror, making me lie down for a massage and pretending to be a life coach / therapist.

I personally would rather just get my hair cut and spend the rest on a meal and a bottle of wine with my mates.
Never again will the wolf get so close to my door
