    Which law??

There are reputable companies online who will supply you with and without any specification.

Are you saying that we are stupid to buy off them?

Or do you have an undeclared, but vested interest in putting us off them?

I'll let you read all about it for yourself:

They can be bought from UK websites without a prescription (eg getlenses.co.uk/lensway.co.uk) on line using their uk websites - they send them from other civilised countries (eg Netherlands) where their residents are not called "stupid" by "professional" opticians for buying direct!

Buying at the cheapest price is sensible, but not having a regular contact lens check up is utterly moronic.

And if you are having a regular contact lens check ups, then why would you not have a prescription?

Anyway, the two companies that you quote actually charge more for the contact lenses that I use than my UK optician that carries out regular contact lens check ups and gives me a prescription.

I answered your post where you advised we should use "non UK websites".

This is not so as I have shown!

They do seem based here, send out from here in UK, but use another European country to despatch the lenses if you don't supply a prescription.

    They are NOT based here

The first one very cleverly says " uk based customer services" and the other one dont even try to pretend to be uk based - they just have a toll free number- which is in San Francisco

The minimal cost of an annual contact lens assessment is nothing when you consider the problems that can be caused by using the wrong lenses

Quentin - has it occurred to you that maybe these UK laws are in place, not to protect Opticians income and prevent people from saving money, but to protect the mis-informed public from themselves?

Without regulation of supply, there is nothing to prevent the public from self fitting, without proper instruction or supervision. In the wrong hands, contact lenses can be dangerous. You wouldn't have seen the damage they can do 1st hand, but I most certainly have.

Circumventing UK law isn't clever. These companies aren't there to do you any favours, they are there to make money out of you, irrespective of the consequences, knowing full well that they cannot be held account for their actions.

    Still the good guys?

And as I mentioned before, there are UK opticians who provide all the aftercare necessary, and still undercut these online suppliers who do not.

If saving money is the aim, people should check the UK suppliers first.
  • After 30 years of wearing glasses I'm trying out a trial of contact lenses from Specsavers (30 day lenses). I do prefer them to glasses although putting them in my eyes in the morning takes some time!

I only got the solution on Sunday and seem to be using quite a lot. Can anyone comment on how long 100ml should last please?

The lenses I have are elite and I would pay £13 per mth for the aftercare package to include solutions etc Does anyone know how many bottles of solutions will I receive?

    Thank you

if you purchase from sites like this then you are leaving yourself open to buying counterfeit goods and you have no recourse under UK consumer law

You need to be aware of that

Canada and USA also have the same stringent laws

All the opticians seem to be closing ranks!

Why do we need this protection, yet if we lived in Holland we wouldn't!

And the suggestion that (eg) getlenses supply fakes is just scaremongering! (Not to say anything about libel)

No one, least of all I suggested that either of the companies you mentioned supplied fakes

You have chosen to read that

If you dont like the law - lobby your MP for change - or move to Holland

That wee bottle is a weeks supply - you should have an appointment booked for this Sunday or close?

When you are on the DD you get a 250 ml bottle a month - so three large bottles. I never wear my contacts every day so never ever used up the 3 month supply. If you are running out and you dont have an appointment in the next few days you can either buy a bottle out of tesco or any supermarket ( small travel bottle around £1 - big bottle about £4 ) or pop in and ask for some more
