I much prefer PAYG. OP make sure you don't end up with a pay monthly which is different to PAYG. Although you shouldn't end up with it my mistake as you have to set up a direct debit I think rather than top up. We moved to pay monthly for £15pm a few years ago before I realised that's not PAYG and we went over our text allowance and ended up paying £20 for texts.
Now we're with giffgaff PAYG and I know I'm not going to get any surprises.0 -
The all charge, even on contract its not part of plans, so you get charged
With 3, on contract, I don't get charged for voicemail. It's free and doesn't use up inclusive minutes.

but you would need to topup by £20 to get a cheap PAYG phone
getting from a supermarket they wont ask for a topup when you purchase phone0 -
well if i can still use my old virgin mobile sim - i'll just buy the cheapest handset that'd work for it IF the voicemail is free and my sim has survived... but being as I can't use my phone it's a bit difficult to phone them at the moment.0

or maybe a very cheap pay-as-you-go which you can turn off the voicemail on...0

You can turn voicemail on or off on any service. Your Virgin SIM will work in any unlocked handset (or one locked to Virgin). There are plenty of new handsets for about a tenner, or for a pound upwards if used, on ebay.No free lunch, and no free laptop
