our first mortgage we paid off in 17 years...and were mortgage free for a year...then we got into this rental lark....

Good for you. My brother totally overpays his mortgage each month (but barely has savings). I always give him advice to not overpay so much, and put some away instead. If he ever came out of work, i doubt the bank would be fussed if he'd overpaid for years but couldn't pay his monthly installment, as opposed to him being able to rely on savings.

I don't overpay, I put my savings into a peer to peer lender with 6% interest :D

From the sounds of it your mortgages are already cheap if you can have 3 mortgages and have only now just gone into 4 figures for all 3 together. I only have one house and it is quite close to 4 figures just for that one.
    I guess its all relative....yes...
but I cant help think back to when we bought our first home and the monthly payment was just over £200...
by the time we repaid that one it was down to £32 per month!
frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!

I'm 10 years ahead of you (we've had this mortgage for 5 years already). but my first mortgage was in 2002 so half way through that. Then my third one began last month.:rotfl: hmmm, think I've confused myself:D:p

Oh goodness, I wish mine was just over £200. :D Even when I bought my house 12 years ago it was no where near £200 per month. And it is no closer to that now.

I'm guessing you don't live near London ;)
