I love the self-service machines for this reason. When my small change builds up I spend 10 mins. feeding it into the self-service checkout. And there is no commission!

I'm guessing the person in the queue behind you apreciates this.....

I'm not sure from a legal aspect but I would have thought from such a restrictive condition this term should have been signed on the machine to anyone wanting to do a transaction would be forewarned beforehand and not after the transaction has taken place where the person has no choice to make an informed decision.
That is so very true. Adding terms to a contract after the event is simply wrong.

I accept it does say in the 'small print' but I think this is an exceptionally harsh penalty - I could swallow them taking an extra percentage but to trouser the whole lot is outrageous.
It may well say that in the 'small print', but is there a notice on the machine stating it?

The contract is formed when both parties are committed.
Clearly the customer is committed when he puts his money in the machine. To then present the customer with a piece of paper with extra conditions on it is not allowed.

p.s. I've PMd a board guide to ask if this thread can be moved to the Consumer Rights board.

If this is the same as the machine that the OP used, it does state "Redeem voucher at this location today" although it doesn't "only valid for today" or anything similar.

looked at the Coinstar machine at my local Asda this morning, could not see anything written on the machine itself , but on the actual screen a notice did appear to say that a voucher could only be used in this store and must be used the same day as printed

I'm guessing that their local asda has more than one self service machine, and I'm also guessing that the poster doesn't care about what others think of their payment method habits.

I know now there is a statement on the machine that says 'redeem today' but to me it reads more like a 'hey - you don't have to wait for your cash you can get it right now!' type notice rather than a 'you MUST redeem this voucher today or we get to keep all your cash' type of notice.
It is also, apparently, down to the stores where the machines are located to decide what the time frame it will cash vouchers in.
Its the scale of the penalty that I find shocking - to take a 'oopps gottcha' approach and take the lot! really!?

That's the way I see it too.

    Keep on at Asda.

Well here's something I never thought of...I've just been mailed and told supermarkets insist on it being cashed on the same day so that its easier for them to match up the ticket with the person who cashed it in on their CCTV cameras when investigating money laundering/counterfeit coins...?!

Money laundering using a Coin Star?? I guess if the average criminal is paid in two pence pieces for his drugs, sure..
