Wouldn't a better idea be to cook up more potatoes than you need, but only mash what you want to eat that day? The remaining cooked potatoes are going to last a lot longer, and even freeze a lot better, than pre-mashed ones.

I've tried cooking whole potatoes and keeping them in the fridge but after a couple of days the edges dry out. I've frozen potatoes with mixed success. Some types are OK but some just break up on defrosting.

I thought that colcannon was mashed potatoe with cooked cabbage through it - butt hat the cabbage was just left shredded, rather than mashed. Then you can always bung it into a frying pan to crisp it up a little - or is that bubble and squeak?

oh, dear, now I have confused myself!

A family staple of ours is mashed carrot and onion but my mother never seems to make enough. I have a friend that always makes up mash in a large batch and freezes it in individual portions.

Cheers. Does the breaking up matter if you are going to mash them anyway?

I roll the left over mash into a long sausage shape in greaseproof paper then freeze it. You can cut it into rounds when it's frozen and dip it in egg and breadcrumbs and fry or cook in the oven. Goes very nicely with homemade chicken gougons
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

No, it doesn't matter if you are mashing but why store whole potato's when you can mash when hot and soft right after cooking. I tried freezing whole ones as I thought this would be more flexible and I could have whole ones if I fancied them. In that case it does matter.

    On the subject of mash.

At the height of by dieting run I tried the 'you are what you eat' millet mash.

'Boil millet with cauliflower and finely choped onions. Then mash up to form a mash potato substitute' - yeah right. Mash up to form a soggy cardboard substitute would be more like it.

Anyone feeling creative could give it a go.

I had the forst lot of mash I'd frozen earlier. Allowed it to thaw slowly, mashed it lightly before microwaving and again half way through the reheat. It came out fine. Good job too because I've got loads of the stuff :)
