    Hey Lucky,

I'm cheating and looked at the end of your diary today (I'm about half way through now)
Does anyone have any solid wood floors and cons with them ?

I am in the process of having all new pine floorboards in my house. The old ones had word worm and were in a bad state.

Some cons with solid wood floors I have noted in my time:

-Noise (especially if you are in a terrace). Generally if you wear heels etc. across them it makes quite a clomping sound which can transfer across to your neighbours. Also it's easier for noise to travel across to you from your neighbour's without a carpet to absorb any of it. Always good to check for any gaps around joists etc.
-Drafts from gaps in the boards, although if you are having an underlay this shouldn't be much of a problem.
-Scratches from furniture etc. if you want to keep them pristine for longer then make sure to get the little felt pads that go on furniture feet.

I've lived with floorboards for a long time and those are the 3 main things. However, I don't think they are big enough for me to ever want to have carpets. I love the look and feel of floorboards, they are very versatile, can be stained or painted or add a rug to change the look up.

I am afraid I have no experience with engineered wood floors, but would assume most of my cons would transfer to them.

    Hope that helps a little.

Thank you very much for spending the time to read thro means a lot :]

    Thanks for the tips

I guess some of these cons wont apply to me as mine will be going downstairs on concrete base i can however see them getting colder than carpet would in the winter months even with the use of a thermal barrier

I love pine that must be very expensive to do the whole floor boards but well worth it :]

Yes, had already decided if I want rid of this mortgage in 5 years time, I have to o/p £250 each month, so the saving on interest helps enormously.

This is great news for you, it was well worth changing your rate. :money: I can only say to you - keep on top of it !! when your fixed rate ends, don't wait (like I did) seek another straight away:D

I know my interest has been cut more than I thought as well.:rotfl: Laughing all the way now.

Great you've got your offer now, I sorted mine out in August and although the bigger payment went through beginning sept its only now I see the difference, it actually feels a very long time ago that it was sorted, things move so slowly in mortgage world when its to our benefit.

Hope you get sorted with your flooring and carpeting soon, then is it "shopping" time for furniture ?? and "move in" time,

Great job :] i hope you smash and hit your 5 year target

Iv got a week of work there next week now sanding glossing and painting few more bits

Then once floor is down wood and carpet i can defiantly shop i have a lot of stuff already just mainly the living room conservatory and dinning room stuff

Great stuff on receiving the mortgage paperwork - won't be long now til you're saving a packet every month :T

High end laminate flooring here in some downstairs areas - looks like wood, feels like wood, sounds like wood and everyone asks if it is wood! Probably as it's a matt finish. But needed it to be washable, scratch resistant and generally tough due to the dogs. And it is. Also laid on concrete with a layer of something inbetween (guessing insulation). Love it, but I'd have gone real wood route if I didn't have the dogs. :)

The rooflights won't be very big I'd have thought, as there's already a south facing 5ft window planned in. Will speak to architect to see what she's thinking.

What a good week with the win and refunds. Nice one :T

    Thanks Ali :]

Ya i know what you mean animals do make a lot of decisions for us haha

Youd be surprised how big you can get away with ali i went for 98x118 because thats what my mum has in here dorma bungalow her floor space is probably 3 times the size of mine so thinking about it mine should be super light haha

I went for the ones that open from the top as well so i can open them up wide as the front of the house looks great :]

Refunds and wins are always welcome haha

  • Hi Lucky -I've been reading through your diary and wanted to say well done, you've achieved so much in such a small space of time. If you carry on at that rate I'm sure you'll have the mortgage paid off in no time (or at least have the cash stashed away to pay it off if you wanted to)! :T:T:T
