When you have a few names you like, I would strongly recommend going and standing outside a few local schools at home time and listening to the names that are shrieked across the playground! We are a white British/British Pakistani (Muslim) family so for our first daughter we chose a name that is both Muslim and well-known in Britain. It was only once she started school that I realised it is a popular name but people with this name seem to fall into only two camps - mixed race families (no prob with that) and massive chavs (the ones who shriek across the playground while dangling a fag from their hand). While I don't suppose being a chav is a crime, I'm not particularly happy that my daughter has a chavvy name.

Following on from what rach_k says - you have to think of accents too. I'm from Essex and some 'a' sounds in an Essex accent don't sound too good. Jade can become Jaaaaade from certain mouths. Sorry, but I can say it cos I'm from there ;) (Sorry to any Essex bods with kids called Jade, etc!)

Also think hard (as everyone has to these days) about future work emails, etc, and how the names go together (and 3 initials - which we use at work). Wasn't there someone with the surname Hite whose first name began with an S and their email was to use their first initial and surname?! I heard Philip Schofield on Loose Women the other day saying they liked the name Tess before realising at the last min it would sound like Tesco Field.
