    There is a lot of media coverage regarding electricity and gas switching, less about phone/broadband and hardly any about tv, so it is very possible for people, who don't frequent forums like this, to be unaware.

    We had Sky many years ago and no offers were made when you cancelled back then.

    Probably because there are far more competitors in the energy market, than in telcoms, and then in TV. So more money to be made in the switching business. Sky and VM still dominate the subscription TV business, with BT only a very recent entrant to the market. Whereas there are four major players in telcoms, and dozens in energy, in addition to the Big Six.

    I agree. Sky and VM do dominate the subscription TV business and charge an arm and a leg for it which the majority of people just pay. People also subscribe irrationally, in that they will sign up for a package to have access to it but won't necessarily watch it. And quite often don't.

    Freetime, YouView from BT and YouView from TalkTalk are the new kids on the block with an impressive sign up rate, and Plusnet are about to join them. Then theres the OTT (on demand) internet providers such as Amazon Prime and Netflix. Competition is building and all the alternatives are far cheaper than the traditional two dominators which can only be a good thing.
  • Never got a call from sky begging me not to leave so have been sky free for a whole week now and am not missing it one little bit. So thanks Sky for not trying to hard to keep me. I am now saving £1056 per year !!

    ps...The picture quality on my new Humax youview box is miles better than sky too :0)

    All in all I could not be happier - My kids on the other hand ...........

    I'm about to cancel my Sky t.v. package and am looking at alternatives;
    can someone please tell me, what is the difference between the Humax Freesat and the Humax Youview ?
    The only live broadcasts we watch are news, sport and BBC. Everything else is watched on catch up or SkyPlus.
    We only have t.v. with Sky; 'phone and broadband are currently with B.T. (also nearing the end of contract) who have offered a pretty good deal if we stay with them and include BT Vision.
    Thank you.

    Basically the Freesat box can use the same connections that your Sky box used whilst the YouView box requires a TV aerial.

    Channel lineup is slightly different between Freeview and Freesat so perhaps check if there's a station that you really want to see if it's available.

    The Humax Freesat boxes incorporate Freetime which is the same as YouView in that it allows you to seamlessly connect to catchup programmes via the Tv Guide.
