A provisional DL can be cheaper, but some banks might not accept it.

True and one of the dumbest rules some banks have.

I don't understand this, I was able to go onto a bank website who I did not and have never banked with, and set up a current account online without the need for any documents to be seen. I did not even have to go to the branch with any documents. They send me a debit card and online login details and that was it.

Im sure they did not ask for any details of my documents either.

Doesn't always happen this way though, I have opened some accounts online without issue and others I've had to go into a branch with ID.

  • Yeah, tried with Nation Wide, got accepted for a basic account then got an email saying I'll need to provide forms of ID I don't have, so back to square 1

I had them paid via a Post Office account, the Job Center open these for you and only benefits can get paid in to them, mines currently closed as it's been inactive for some time now.

How long ago was this account closed?

Closing statement from this account could be used as ID if it is in the last 3 months

Are you sure it is definitely closed, as inactive and closed are not the same thing, worth checking as you won't be any worse off

It can be used as a proof of address, but

I'm applying online with Nationwide, hopefully it goes well but I doubt it.

However you apply checks will still need to be made.

Did you see "If you cannot produce any of the documents from the tables, please contact your local branch as there may be other forms of identification you can use."

If the post office account is the one that only accepts benefits the statement cannot be used as address confirmation for Lloyds or Halifax/BOS - I can't comment on other banks.

Might be an idea to go in and see them anyway and explain the situation taking in all forms of ID that you currently have.

It can be tricky if you are not on the electoral roll at your new address. Were you on the electoral roll at your previous address?

Have you checked your credit file to see what information is lodged on it? Try Noddle as it is free, it might give an indication if anything such as past electoral roll details are held for you.

The problem is that the automated systems that do the identity checks rely on being able to find your presence through doing a search on you, even if it just to confirm your existence on the electoral roll. If you don't 'exist' from their point of view, no open accounts and no electoral roll details, that is when you end up with a problem.

Do you have a letter from your new employer confirming you have been employed by them? If they can send one to your current address this may help.

If they won't open you a current account ask if they will let you open a savings account with a cash card. At least that way you will be able to access your salary and have something to give to your employer. I am sure that once you get all of your ID sorted, which shouldn't take long, you could then open a current account.

You will be able to get this all sorted one way or another.

    You only mention over 18yo so here goes;

Nat West will allow someone under 20yo to use a birth certificate as ID - just checked online after digging a little deeper than the first page of ID required.

As for address verification, you state recently moved into mother's address - therefore she hopefully has informed the council and your name can be added to the new Council Tax bill.
  • Thanks for the reply guys.

I'm 24 so a birth certificate isn't an option, currently waiting on the proof of NI letter, as for my employer I asked to get proof of employment and a wage slip delivered to my house, it's been 2 weeks since I asked and still nothing.

I should be put on the electoral role by next week, maybe the job center might be able to provide me with something? But I know most banks will only allow one benefit letter for an address rather than two.
