Awww,he's gorgeous Melly! Look at that little face! I did know it was your birthday Melly, but you had such an awful day that it felt like rubbing salt in the wound to use the word 'happy' at all. So, Happy Unbirthday!
My dad was very clever. He was very academic and scientific, there were always children's chemistry sets in the house and he would frequently do experiments with me from a very young age. He was training to be a doctor before my mother became too ill for him to keep up studying and full time work so he took a job in a building company instead because it allowed him to be at home more. He always pushed me academically but he did it in such a way that I always thought we were playing games, everything was made fun and he never actually sat me down and said we were learning anything. One of my favourite games was counting how many different coloured cars went past while we were out, as I got older this changed to noting down number plates that had specific numbers and adding them up until the total reached 100. His other favourite game when I was little was for when we were on buses. I had to look at the passengers and try to see their watches and tell him what the time was.
Even going for a walk when I was little would involve looking at plants in the street and learning their names, or looking at how a house was constructed and the way the bricks were laid to make them steady and how the roof was kept on. We would then go home and build our own buildings from what he taught me using Lego and Mechano.
We used to have wild thing days when we would catch a train to the countryside and he would put caterpillars and insects on my hand and let me look at birds through his binoculars and teach me about how they lived. I always saw it as fun times with dad, I never realised he was educating me until I was a lot older when in fact he was teaching me constantly.Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened - Anatole France

Gitdog would like to invite anyone feeling stressed to join him in a moment of relaxation, although he does accept not everyone may want to let it all hang out in quite the same way.
Being a complete stresshead it has taken him 18 months to feel safe enough to display his all like this, so he is a fine example of hanging on in there and it can get better. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

I love hearing your stories about your Dad WaS!
He sounds very much like mine.
Finding joy in the small things and making everything interesting and educational. My Dad used to work in a lab (before becoming a radiographer) and always pointed out funny and unusual number plates!
 Here's to amazing Dads!0 -
