Working away from home and young family

I was shocked to discover that one of my younger colleagues had absolutely not the first clue how to change a fuse in a plug, or change a plug, or even give a plug a basic visual inspection to ensure it was safe to use. No idea what they taught them at school when she was there, I'm sure my boys learned the basics about electricity if nothing else!
We weren't taught these things at school but our parents made sure we didn't leave home without being able to manage a household.
If you're adult enough to be living independently, you should know about the basics - no adult should need to be taught how to change a lightbulb or the battery in a smoke alarm as mentioned before!
When people live together, it can make sense to divide the jobs up if that suits them, but not the knowledge.0 -
When Southern Water were round the other week the dinosaur they sent round congratulated me on knowing where the stopcock was as according to him women never know these things <eye roll>I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
I threatened not to let DS1 leave home before he'd learned to sew a button on, but as he only ever wears a shirt when I make him, he decided he could manage without. In fact for Grandma's funeral I had to bring a shirt to the church along with his suit, because he's travelling, and "when I packed my rucksack, I did not envisage a need for smart clothes."We weren't taught these things at school but our parents made sure we didn't leave home without being able to manage a household.

:rotfl: I confess both my brother and I struggled to find it in Mum's house the other day. To be fair, it's in the cupboard under the stairs rather than under the sink. When Southern Water were round the other week the dinosaur they sent round congratulated me on knowing where the stopcock was as according to him women never know these things <eye roll>Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
The problem I find is that if I don't DO something for a year or two, I forget the KNOWLEDGE. So I try to make a point of doing stuff that doesn't come naturally so that I do keep it up.0
