BT is very competitive for 0845 and 0870 calls during daytimes as well.
A properly-programmed Orchid takes the uncertainty/effort away.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
But, for the purist, selecting BT or 18185 for 0845/0870 calling depends on day & time of day.

I couldn't agree more.No reliance should be placed on the above.0 -
Has anyone had any experience of SKY for phones or broadband.
If you pay BT rental of £10.50, SKY gives you free evening and weekend calls and free broadband up to 2Mb.
If you want free all week calls + free international, SKY charges £5.
To me that add up to £15.50 for ALL local and national and international calls and includes free broadband.
Thats cheaper than Talk Talk, of am I missing something. (I know you need SKY TV to qualify, but most people have that already).0 -
Only that calls to 055, 056, 07, 084, 087 and 09 numbers are not included.
I have checked Martin's UK CallChecker program and read his various articles but there does not seem to be a cheapest access number (non-account) variety available to use to reduce the cost of such prefix numbers.
Can you - or any other forum member - offer advice here?
Much appreciated...!0 -
Welcome to the MSE forums cyberwok.
You don't need to try to reduce the cost of 0500, 0800 or 0808 calls - they're all free from a BT landline (but beware premium rate-type charges from mobiles).
The cost of calling 0845 and 0870 numbers varies according to day and time of day and, although the MSE UK Callchecker may sometimes show gateway providers offering cheaper rates, I tend to stick with BT or 18185 for making those calls. See HERE.
The cost of calling 0844 numbers (again, from a BT landline) can, depending on the 5th, 6th and 7th digits (see HERE), be ½p, 1p, 2p, 3p, 4p or 5p per minute.
The cost of calling 0871 and 0872 numbers (again, from a BT landline) can, depending on the 5th, 6th and 7th digits (see HERE), be 6p, 7p, 8p, 9p or 10p per minute.
In the case of all 084/087 numnbers, it's always worth checking whether a geographical alternative is available on the SayNoTo0870.com web site.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Many thanks, that info was extremely detailed and extremely helpful. Thanks again.0

Hi,
I need to get my BT phone line connected so I can get the See, Speak and Surf package with SKY. What is the best way to do this because BT's website say that i have to pay £125 to get my phone line connected. I already have a BT box on the wall but there's no tone when I plug a phone in although there is a line going from my BT box to the telephone pole. What is the best and cheapest way I can do this and go with SKY please?
Thank you

Cheapest way? Ask for the half price installation offer (see HERE). You'll have to ask - they don't offer it as a matter of course.
You'll have to agree to an 18 month contract but, as having a BT line is the basis for most money-saving on telephony anyway (see the HERE link in my signature below), that's no bad thing IMHO.
Don't go with Sky's line rental if they offer it (insist you want Carrier PreSelection Sky Talk).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hi,
Thanks. So even though i have a BT phone box on the wall because there is no tone, the cheapest option is to sign up to BT for 18months and get reconnected for half the price?
Also, when i have sorted that out i will be able to connect to sky so i can have broadband and sky tv with the sports package. Basically i want Sky TV but i dont mind only having 2 mixes, Sky Sports, Sky Broadband upto 8mb 40gb allowance and free evening and weekend calls for the cheapest price possible?
thanks

However, you should still ask BT about reconnection of the line - they may still offer reconnection free of charge. If they do, note the time and date and the identity of the person making the offer and try to get that aspect in writing. If you get turned down, ask for the half price connection.
If it's available in your area, you can opt for the Sky Talk (phone) part of Sky's See, Speak, Surf offering immediately the BT line is operational - you're only contracted to BT for the line rental for 18 months (you can start using a CPS calls provider and/or indirect access providers to make your calls immediately).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market.
