Bought a clocked car from a dealer.
Bought a BMW 120D 2005 with a mileage of 90k yesterday for my mum. Had full service history, and 1 MOT certificate and on it had all the previous mileage which seemed ok
The ad was on autotrader and it said dealer on it. He gave us a post code to go to which we went to and we called him and he said i am not their at the moment and would be there in 45 mins and he said you should have called before coming which he didnt state when giving the post code as I told him I will come between 3-4pm and he agreed. Anyways so we went to the bank to get the money but was only able to get £3000 and the price of the car was £4550, so when I met the seller we told him this is the case and we told him we would give £3000 cash and transfer the remaining money by online bank transfer and he was little hesitant at first but agreed after so gave the cash and transferred the remaining money to him but the money didnt go straight to his account and was being processed and he said thats fine I trust you, so we drove home.
We got home and my dad checked the car and said theres something wrong with the car so went on the vosa website and checked the mileage with the mot certificate reference number and I was shocked to see 194k mileage. Then checked the service history properly and saw that the numbers were changed using a pen.
So I went on my bank account and checked to see if the transaction has gone through but it didnt go through and was still on the pending list so cancelled the transaction. But paid £3000 by cash what can I do now?

Contact the seller and ask for a full refund stating the mileage to be wholly inaccurate.
If they won't play ball go straight to trading standards.Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.
If you don't like my opinion feel free to respond with your own.0 -
See if he complains. That way you have a car for 3k and you know the history. If it is all motorway miles it might be fine.
Stupid way to buy a car though. Absolutely EVERY bit of advice you ever see says do not buy a car from a car park or someone just giving a post code. Dealer premises or house where the V5 is.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
Sadly that's why people are reluctant to take bank transfer amongst other payment types.
It's also a sad state of affairs that you're posting this without even having contacted the seller for an explanation.
I may have done the same as you, but I certainly would never accept this sort of setup in the future if ever offered to me.
I don't know why the car wasn't checked thoroughly before buying though.0 -
Exemplary tale.
Buy a car your not familiar with from someone you don't know, with no premises who appears unfamiliar with normal business practices, then do your homework after the fact. Damn sneaky overwriting a zero over the one to make 194,000 read 090,000miles.
How about a copy of the ad cached from AT?0 -
Just contacted the seller and he said he didnt know the mileage was clocked and said he bought ot like that and he said he will contact the previous seller and get to me regarding this. I also told him I will go to trading standards if this doesnt get sorted out.0

I wouldnt wait for him to get back to you, I'd just take the car back and get your cash back.
Has he mentioned the cancelled bank transfer?0 -

I could do but dont exactly know where he lives as he gave postcode and didnt go to his house.
No he didnt say anything about that.0 -

But at 194k how long more would it last for and also how can I be sure whether the mileage is motorway miles or not.
I should have been more careful.0 -

What he did or didn't do with regard to him purchasing the car is no no concern of yours.
You need to get your money back ASAP.
That means by this afternoon at the latest.0
