The landlord asked for mine and other peoples phone numbers than forwarded them to the old boys eldest son that's how I got a call.
That would be a bigger issue for me. How dare your landlord hand out your details without your consent.
Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?

    Me too.

I'm VERY wary of who I give my phone numbers out to.
And it wouldn't be to a landlord of a pub I drink in.

Do you & your friends generally give out your phone numbers willy-nilly?

Can I have a timeline of events please, because I sort of having it going like this.

    Old boy dies.

Next of kin is asked to pay for funeral and refuses

Old boys son decides to wander down the pub his Dad used to drink in.

Son asks pub landlord for contact numbers for his regulars.

Landlord has them and hands them over.

Son contacts people he hasn't met and he doesn't know if his Dad met asking for substantial sum towards funeral costs he can't/won't pay.

The landlord asked for our (quiz team) numbers in January so he could arrange a quiz between us and a rival pub with the winning tean getting £300. That's how he managed to give our contact deatails to the mans son. Yes were all upset over this and will never go in there again.

If I were a regular in that pub and the landlord had given my personal contact details to somebody else - without checking with me first - he wouldn't have had chance to bar me.
I'd have told him exactly what I thought of him and told him he could stuff his quiz and his pub where the sun don't shine.

Actually, in the circumstances you mention, I wouldn't have given him my phone number anyway.

Maybe this is a lesson learned not to be so naïve and free with your contact details.

This all still sounds very strange and unbelievable.
