Exactly. How would the French authorities verify who you are by taking a birth certificate? Not that you'd get that far as no airline, ferry company, coach or rail operator would take you out of the UK without a passport.
You'll need to report it lost and replace it. If you definitely want to go to France by the end of February then it may be worth considering an appointment as the standard process may not be quick enough.

You're making the assumption that the French authorities actually care. Most countries on the continent aren't as paranoid/obsessed with immigration as the UK is. I go to Spain around twice a year and they rarely even look at the passport - I'm generally just waved straight through as I lift it towards them and they can see it's an EU passport. The French have only ever checked mine once as well, usually it's only the UK officers checking at Dover/Folkestone.
Plus of course you don't need a passport to get back into the UK. If you're a UK citizen then you're allowed in (though obviously it will be an enormous hassle proving that without a passport!).
I agree though - if it's physically possible to replace it then do so. If it wasn't (i.e. you lost it that morning etc.) then I'd just risk going without it.0 -

seeing as you go to spain twice a year im sure on each occasion that you would have filled out the pre-arrival information prior to arriving there and they would have checked you, and everyone else, on their departmental databases we of course do not require such information prior to arriving in the UK and therefore we undertake face to face checks. Everytime i have arrived in Spain the local immigration always face check me, and in theory this is all that is required because of the pre-arrival checks.
Given the increased security level in the UK and Europe at the mo traveling without a passport is really not a good idea, and this comes from someone in the knowLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -

Yes we do... The UK has API checks. And we don't necessarily have "face to face checks" - I rarely interact with anyone at UK immigration, I use the E-Passport gates with automatic facial recognition.
Of course it's not a good idea, hence why I said if it's physically possible to get a passport then do so. You certainly won't be getting on any plane without it, but the ferry between Dover and Calais is easy enough to get away with if strictly necessary.
Nor do I think the "increased security level" is remotely relevant. If you are stopped at a border without a passport then you'll be treated just like you would be at any other time.0 -
I lost my passport a few years back whilst flying on domestic flight- somewhere between showing it at departures and arriving back home.
Applied for a replacement- didn't need an interview either- am pretty sure I may have had my old number from a photocopy0 -

You don't even need to hold a UK passport to skip the face to face checks, I don't hold a UK passport but have been using the electronic gates for most of the last six years with my NZ passport:beer:0 -
I've been reading this thread, hoping you'd post to say you'd found it......
This morning my sister whatsapp's me to ask me if I know my mom has my passport? I was "!!!!!!, do you mean she has my passport, my new one?".
My sister said yes, I almost had heart failure, I didn't even notice it was missing and I have a holiday in 54 days and my mom is in SA with my passport. Luckily a friend is coming to UK tomorrow and I've told them to give it to her and I will go to London to collect it.
I would've been running around like a headless chicken day before my holiday! LUCKY ESCAPE!
I wanted to kill my 80 year old mother, I bet she thought it was hers without checking it!!!!!!!! She's lucky she's 10 000 miles away!0 -

You're wrong but hell what do i know its not as if i do this kinda thing for a living.
I should add api is in place with the creation of e borders but this is not the norm for the vast majority of ports and airports in the ukLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0
