Cannot find passport..Help!

So I have been searching for my passport for a while now and can't find it (EHIC card is with it too).

I may be going to Paris for a couple of days at the end of February (getting there via Eurostar).

Is a passport vital? Can I not take my birth certificate in place of it?

Also, how do I sort out getting a new passport (first lost one) and would it require an interview?

Help would be really appreciated. Thank you

To go to France (or anywhere in the EU) without a passport, you would need to show a national identity card. These are compulsory in most EU countries, but not in the UK. A birth certificate would be about as much use as a Tesco Clubcard... or a chocolate teapot for that matter!

Did you put it in a glove box in a car?

Did you use it to open a bank account or prove your identity recently?

Exactly. How would the French authorities verify who you are by taking a birth certificate? Not that you'd get that far as no airline, ferry company, coach or rail operator would take you out of the UK without a passport.

You'll need to report it lost and replace it. If you definitely want to go to France by the end of February then it may be worth considering an appointment as the standard process may not be quick enough.

  • OK. I last had it at a job interview many months ago but I do believe I had it with me at home. Checked all over, including my folder that I take to interviews, my box full of important documents and even the car. Nothing whatsoever

As it was an interview did you take a special bag or coat? Maybe in one.of those?
  • If it helps I renewed my passport last week. Sent it off on the Saturday and got the new one back on Thursday!!! (Mind you, mine wasn't lost etc, but the turnaround is really quick at present)

We found our passports in the fruit bowl after ripping the house apart in a frantic search twelve hours before a Paris trip!

Did the interviewer take your passport to make a photocopy?
