You mean you can't figure it out? If you really want to just give in change it to look and work like Windows7.

Would it be possible for a computer to upgrade itself from W7 to W8 if it was originally sold with a W8 professional licence (which allows the purchaser to downgrade to W7) and this was done by the seller before the OP purchased it?

    No........

The desktop mode is pretty much identical in appearance to Win7.

If you know how to configure it then 8.1 is way better than 8 and on par with win 7 and after using the win 10 technical preview it is a lot better than 8

    Slightly better,.

You mean not quite as bad?

Mine tried to update to 8.1 when it was already on 8.1!

    Probably 8.1 Update 1, 2 or 3.

If you consider flat single solid coloured square cornered windows with big square control buttons "pretty much identical", then you could say it's even more pretty much identical to Windows 3.

What about when you put in a disc and you get a box pop up telling you to "Tap here", which you can't dismiss with the mouse.

How is it "way better"? Yes you can boot straight to desktop, but anybody with a brain got a start menu replacement on 8 which did that anyway.

Where are the Aero glass effects? It's just a flat mush. Total dullsville.

And some of the apps (eg. Outlook) are so bad that you can't even tell what you've highlighted or which folder you're going to drag things into.

Maybe they will decide to put proper transparency into 10, so that people can decide what they want their desktop to look like, rather than it being governed by the capabilities of a cheapo mobile phone.

(However, some are saying that they've addressed the apparent inconsistency of having transparency in the task bar but not in window borders, by removing it from the taskbar too.)

They've also done away with the start/home page on 10, by reducing it to half size, overlaying it on the desktop, and pretending they've re-invented the start menu.

The 10 tech preview only looks good because 8/8.1 were so awful; the desktop still falls short of Windows 7 (and Mac and Ubuntu).

Perhaps you shouldn't use it then? You can be happy with any of the other OS's you mention. Pointless making yourself miserable when you have choices...:)
