Microsoft know exactly what their versions of Windows are called. None of those names are "Windows 8.5".I dont even think MS know what Windows 8.5 is as the 3 links i provided all give 3 different definitions
None of the 3 links you posted were to a Microsoft site, just to sites speculating on things, in some cases a long way ahead of how events actually played out.
For instance:
Everybody (well nearly everybody) knows what the "planned upgrade to Windows 8" was actually called when it got released - it's Windows 8.1. Also it fairly obviously didn't get released last month.Windows 8.5 is the planned upgrade to Windows 8. Microsoft is hoping for a December, 2014 release.
I think the answer to the OP's problem is either:- The OP was running Windows 8, which will do its darndest to get you to upgrade to 8.1, and is now running 8.1, not 8.5. I've seen banners popping up in Windows 8 offering to upgrade and if I clicked on the wrong place or perhaps didn't stop it in time, I can well imagine ending up in 8.1 without wanting to, or
- There is some sort of malware calling itself Windows 8.5

I WISH PEOPLE ON MSE WOULD READ.
I ONLY POINTED OUT WHERE IT MENTIONED WINDOWS 8.5.
infact the only MS 8.5 is Microsoft Works 8.5 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/20189660 -
Oh dear yet again you resort to shouting , berating people on MSE for the fact they can't read, well sonny I can read "je peux lire" your signature offends me but it allows me to say perhaps "mais tu es un fou charlie". Leave the chip on your shoulder with your years of experience or perhaps you should leave the forum.I WISH PEOPLE ON MSE WOULD READ.

Edited: for the benefit of those who may think that I don't feel for those who were killed or bereaved or otherwise touched by the tragedy that was the assault on Charlie Hebdo. I do but of course the quoted poster Collabora uses je suis charlie as his siggie I am just renaming it to the equivalent of "a proper Charlie"0 -

the fact that i provide links and still get insulted when those insuling cant produce evidence to back them up and the gang on MSE that troll my posts to belittle and insult me, then i have a right to SHOUT as its this gang that should be removed from the forum.0 -

Well, the MSE forum team don't share your sentiments as it was you (posting as earthstorm) and not "this gang" that was previously removed from the forum yet here you are again posting in exactly the same way that had you banned before.
I'm amazed that after breaching forum rules by signing up with a new id you still post in exactly the same manner.
There is no point in denying that you and earthstorm are one and the same as anyone who compares previous posts will see that this is the case.0 -
Anyway........Back to the issue....It's not possible for Windows7 to just automatically update to another version of the OS, as pointed out in the first couple of replies.
We need the OP to come back and tell us more details..I suspect that, if they have W8.1, it wasn't exactly an automatic update...;)Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh.I did wonder about a poster who joined in Dec 2014 and racked up hundreds of posts on a variety of forums. All starts making sense now...0 -
