It would updates patches etc. if you have auto update active, which you set , so it is your permission0 -
8.5, pfftttt, I'm on 10!
The start menu is now like the 8 home screen, but it only covers half of the desktop instead of being a separate page.
(Incidentally, you can do a visual trick in 8.1; if you set the home screen wallpaper to be the same as your Windows desktop, it can reduce the jarring effect of flipping to the home screen.)0 -

Wrong.
I kept getting the "Get Windows 8.1 for free" message, to which I would click the "Remind me Later" button, as there wasn't an actual "No" button.
Then one day, as I was browsing, it shut itself down, only to restart as Windows 8.1.0 -

sounds like the messages had a time limit to click 'remind you later' and if you dont click this it will do the update. I know Norton had this type of popup a few years back0 -
So I was correct, in that it will upgrade without your explicit permission.
BTW. It didn't show the "Get Windows 8.1 for free" banner, before it went into the upgrade.0 -

It had to be their somewhere as it cant update on its own, by not clicking to tell it to 'remind you later' you gave it permission to upgrade.
I am sick on the winzip ones myself, but that gives you the option to remind you in 1 day, a week or never
It seems it is an auto update, that user have allowed by not turning it off

Very helpful....
I know one can't mention any other OS in Windows land without being dubbed a fanboy, but late last year I took this oft-repeated and much-maligned advice - and switched to Linux.
It's actually pretty good advice, but it doesn't stop discussions like this one. The huge catalogue of linux distros provides unlimited opportunities for 'mine is bigger/better/quicker/prettier than yours' discussions. (I know which is best but I'm not saying...)0
