It had to be their somewhere as it cant update on its own, by not clicking to tell it to 'remind you later' you gave it permission to upgrade.

There seems to be an awful lot of people who disagree with you Collabora.

Some of many on this one website. (and there are lots more on there)
First off, my computer updated itself without my knowledge nor
my permission. It had asked me a few times, to which my answer was always “Not
Right Now”. However, it decided, of it’s own accord, that it would update
    itself.

I just got up and found my computer is in process right now of updating to 8.1, without permission! Ggrrr!

Same here, Today I woke up to find my computer doing an app up date and i knew this would not be good.

My computer did the same thing to me! Yesterday

happened to me yesterday, for the 2nd time.

Silly argument......The OP is saying their Windows 7 upgraded itself to Windows 8.5, which we are assuming (As the OP has disappeared) is 8.1. This could not have happened without permission. Otherwise there would be a lot of angry W7 users.
The argument about W8 to W8.1 should be for another thread...

  • Would it be possible for a computer to upgrade itself from W7 to W8 if it was originally sold with a W8 professional licence (which allows the purchaser to downgrade to W7) and this was done by the seller before the OP purchased it?

I don't see how a computer would self-upgrade from Windows 7 to 8.x, as it requires a different licence key.

Not one post to calmly ask OP for a screen shot showing what appears to be Windows 8.5. Anyway all the ranting will have scared OP off by now.

If I was to buy Windows 8.0 professional, I can use the licence key provided to install W7 on the computer instead of W8.
Although the computer would then be running on W7, the licence key would also be valid for W8 so an update glitch might well cause the OS to upgrade.

Many years ago, I bought a laptop with Windows Vista ultimate and this allowed me to use the licence to downgrade to XP (although IMO, switching from Vista to XP was an upgrade) and if I decided that I no longer wanted XP, I could switch to Vista at no charge and without needing a new licence.

I know one can't mention any other OS in Windows land without being dubbed a fanboy, but late last year I took this oft-repeated and much-maligned advice - and switched to Linux.

It's actually pretty good advice, but it doesn't stop discussions like this one. The huge catalogue of linux distros provides unlimited opportunities for 'mine is bigger/better/quicker/prettier than yours' discussions. (I know which is best but I'm not saying...)
Yes, that may have been fine for you, but, it hardly answers the question being asked....

Ah, OK - thanks for clarifying.
