You need to identify the root cause as well or it will happen again.

BMW have problems with Thermostats, they fail "open" at about 60k miles. This means the coolant temp never reaches the minimum temp required for the car to initiate a regeneration.

A £40 Thermostat failes and leads to a £1.5k bill for a replacment DPF. Yes, there are lots of alternatives including gutting the stupid thing.

I wonder why the main dealers are giving a "realistic" price for the DPF and added a whopping figure on top though, has the blocked DPF caused another problem e.g Turbo?

I would be looking for something like this

Yes that looks like a great price, I'm just waiting for FIL to get back to me with the part no. so I can check it against ones like that.
    Thanks

I think the root cause was the previous owner who had only done 34,000 miles in 7 years.
I'll know more about the pricing difference once I have the part no.
    Thanks
  • I have just spoke to my FIL and this is the part no. that he was given.

This is the part no. from Suzuki that was quoted at £2400 + vat.
I've had a quick look myself and I cant find anything about it.

It's not the annual mileage that matters, it's how it is driven.

If it's done predominantly fast and long journeys, 34,000 miles in 7 years shouldn't be a problem.

Yes I'm guessing the problem came from the previous owner who had only done 34,000 miles in 7 years, FIL tends to do fairly high miles something like 24,000 a year.

Exactly this, but knowing about DPF issues, i'd never buy a low mileage diesel. I'd want to see at least 75k on a 7yr old diesel.
Unfortunately there are still a lot of old school thinkers, who assume low mileage is a good thing. I'm guessing it's only had one or two services in that 7 years too?

Ha ha. You might miss out on some bargains. I have one that does about 6k a year

It rarely gets used for anything other than 100+ mile runs and has a full dealer service history.

Yes thats the 1 and I cant tell you why that 1 doesn't fit but it doesn't.
Until I know what the other part no. is all about I cant really tell you anymore.
Hopefully my FIL will find out more over the weekend.
Thanks for all the help anyway.
