Suzuki Sx4 DPF filter cost

Hi new to the Forum and just wondering if anyone could give me any advice or point me in the right direction.
6 months ago my father in law bought a Suzuki Sx4 07 plate for £3500 which came with a 3 month warranty.
Over the last few weeks he has been having problems with it and yesterday it has gone into limp mode.
He has managed to get it to the garage and they have now told him the DPF filter is completely clogged up and needs replacing.
The cost of the DPF filter is £2800 plus fitting bringing the total cost to £3100, basicly more than the car is worth.
He bought the car from a main Suzuki dealer and is wanting to know if he has any chance of getting them to sort it out.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hiya, unfortunately I doubt it, DPF problems are nearly always caused by driving style or rather lack of driving. How many miles has your FIL driven? Newer Diesel cars should not be bought for people who only tinker around town or do very few miles for this very reason.

1.9 Diesel I assume? If so, it's the GM/Fiat engine IIRC. A horrible thing.

Anyway, I assume it was bought with low miles? What's your dad's driving profile?

£2800 for a DPF is ridiculous. You can buy the thing for less than £800 for a genuine one. Fitting's no more complicated than putting an exhaust on.

    Here's one:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ADK860503-SUZUKI-SX4-1-9DT-H-Back-DDiS-06-on-Diesel-Particulate-Filter-DPF-/400747843445?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5d4e6ecf75
  • Have a search round, there are professional companies (not talking about pressure washing the thing either) who can clean the filter properly, several hours it takes @ several hundred pounds but nothing like the monopoly money figures being laughingly quoted by the dealer.

Some companies, and there are many schools of thought on this, can remove the DPF innards and reweld the canister up, then reprogram the DPF out, costs vary, and it should be noted that MOT testers are supposed to be looking for this, so tread carefully and if you go down this road don't tell 'em pike.

Assuming you get the DPF professionally cleaned, you can help prevent it happening again by using good quality oils of the correct spec, and giving the car a regular hot run out, say half an hour at least once fully up to temp, give the regen (assuming its working correctly) a chance to work.

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply.
I've just spoke to my FIL and he tells me the car had 34,000 on the clock when he got it and he has put another 10,000 on it since.

    Here's one:

Yes I hear what your saying, I've looked myself and come back with similar prices, I'm just waiting for a Suzuki main dealer to ring me back and see what they say.
Thing is FIL's not a numpty and it's a garage he knows well thats quoted him this price.
They first said it would be £800 and but then said no that was the wrong part and Suzuki have said £2800!.
Anyway I'll let you know what they say when they get back to me.

Someone's talking bollox. I've changed several DPF's including on my mate's Alfa powered by THE SAME 1.9 diesel engine. It's not difficult, and they're not 3 grand a pop.

I've just spoke to a Suzuki main dealer and unfortunately that price is right, for that model it is £2400 + VAT.
They have offered an alternative, they say they have a chemical cleaning system that they can do which would cost about £400 so I'm looking into that.

How about you stop talking to Suzuki main dealers, and start talking to some people who know what they're doing?

ETA: What's the part number? What's special about 'this particular' SX4 that differs from EVERY single other one I can find referenced in the parts lists?

Also, if you can confirm the *actual* model as I'm still assuming 1.9DDIS and not the 1.6 or 2.0 (although I didn't think the 07 was available with those).

As someone stated above modern diesels are not really made for low mile journeys and they can get blocked fairly easily due to this.

If your FIL was doing a lot of motorway miles then the chances of the dpf getting blocked is slim due to the inbuilt regeneration system which activates when the car is at oporating temp and has more than a quarter of fuel in the tank, for people who do short journey's it is recommended that they should give it a blast on the motorway regular

If the EU didn't impose such tight emissions for the manufactures to adhere to they would never put the stupid thing on in the first place

Even if your FIL get the dpf cleaned out it will still get blocked sometime due to the way the car is being driven as an alternative he could always sell it and get a same petrol car hope this helps mate
People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

Hi, I'm not quite sure why such an aggresive tone or who it is you are refering to that I should be talking to.
You are correct it is the 1.9 but I dont have the part number as the car is in Skipton and I'm in Lancaster.
I can give you the reg number for the car if that helps but thats all I have.
I spoke to the Suzuki main dealer as I thought they would be able to check the part off the reg.
    Thanks for the help.
