As someone stated above modern diesels are not really made for low mile journeys and they can get blocked fairly easily due to this.

If your FIL was doing a lot of motorway miles then the chances of the dpf getting blocked is slim due to the inbuilt regeneration system which activates when the car is at oporating temp and has more than a quarter of fuel in the tank, for people who do short journey's it is recommended that they should give it a blast on the motorway regular

If the EU didn't impose such tight emissions for the manufactures to adhere to they would never put the stupid thing on in the first place

Even if your FIL get the dpf cleaned out it will still get blocked sometime due to the way the car is being driven as an alternative he could always sell it and get a same petrol car hope this helps mate

Yes I'm guessing the problem came from the previous owner who had only done 34,000 miles in 7 years, FIL tends to do fairly high miles something like 24,000 a year.

Thanks ok then if he is doing 24,000 then that should enough to regenerate it self, once he gets it sorted out

Also with modern diesels it's very important to use good quality fuel such as shell etc... not the supermarket stuff that has low sulfur in it which can be detrimental on the injectors and the fuel pump not to mention the replacement costs

Modern diesels are fantastic when they are working well but when they go wrong they can be costly to put right. keep us posted on what you decide

Hi, I'm not quite sure why such an aggresive tone or who it is you are refering to that I should be talking to.
You are correct it is the 1.9 but I dont have the part number as the car is in Skipton and I'm in Lancaster.
I can give you the reg number for the car if that helps but thats all I have.
I spoke to the Suzuki main dealer as I thought they would be able to check the part off the reg.
    Thanks for the help.

The way things work now any largish parts dealer can id parts by the reg not just main dealers.

It's not an aggressive tone, nor was it intended to be. It's a suggestion intended to save you several thousand quid. To be honest, if you think that's aggression, I can tell you now why you're accepting a main dealer's crazy parts price without argument.

I'm referring to ANYONE other than a main dealer. Someone who actually cares about the customer, rather than a bunch of lying shysters out only to make as much money from the poor sap with the broken car as they can.

Any parts supplier will be able to look the car up off the VIN or VRM. As for the part number, if Suzuki can give you a price, they can sure as hell give you the bloody part number.

Sign up to Blueprint Live and you'll be able to search for the DPF via VRM, then you'll see how many parts they list. I'll give you a clue. It's one.

Lol i did this the other day we needed a dual mass flywheel for a focus so i seen a sachs one ebay but the lad selling it wasn't sure if it would fit our car - so i called ford pretending to inquire about a dmf and got the part number off them then crossed referenced it with the one on ebay and it matched so bought a brand new sachs dmf for £110 from ebay instead of going to dealers and paying £289+vat  saved a lot of cash lol

Like martin always say "it pay's to shop around"

Thanks for pointing me to Blueprint, very useful indeed and you are correct they only have 1 part no.
That part I can find online for £750 but I'm still not sure thats the right 1.
The garage have allready looked at this and they are saying it's not the right part (I dont know why) and they have all the relevent vehicle details and numbers.
For some reason they are saying there is 2 parts 1 is £800 plus vat the other is £2400 plus vat hence the confusion.
Hopefully we will get to the bottom of it over the weekend and I'll let you know what we find.
Thanks everybody for your input and help.

They would do, wouldn't they. That's the beauty of main dealer aftercare, they can make up whatever lies they like and the customer will just trust them.

There's only one part number. ASK the Suzuki garage to TELL you the part number for the correct part. If they won't give it to you, find another dealer.

Or, find another dealer anyway. Or, forget spending main dealer money on a 3K runabout and take the car to a proper garage, with mechanics rather than monkeys.

Get the correct part number for the Fiat part and see if it varies in price?

It's not at a main dealers It's an independant garage that my FIL knows quite well.
I rang the main dealer to get a price off them and see what they said.
I'll ask my FIL to get the part no. off his garage and see if its the same as the 1 I got from Blueprint.
