The problem that I can envisage is that, if the takeover is agreed, then any responsible company looks at 2 separate points - improving customer service and reducing costs.

Would closing O2's customer service centres and expanding 3's be a benefit? I am currently with O2 and quite happy with their service.

How would it affect Tesco piggy-backers and the rumoured move of Talk Talk from Vodafone to O2?

Masts. No point in duplication or near duplication, so could some be phased out? I get good Voda and O2 reception but not Three or EE, so I would be sure to keep an eye on that.

Pricing. 3 do seem to have better prices - for what I want - than O2, but reception issues rule them out.

    Still very, very early days.

I think some masts will go, just like when Orange/T-Mobile become part of EE, several Orange and T-Mobile masts were shut down
  • Just a point, but...

Hutchison 3G UK Ltd is what we know as "Three". They're headquartered at Star House in Maidenhead, with additional customer services and exec teams in Glasgow.

Hutchison Whampoa (UK) Ltd in Battersea is a holding company. If you visit that address, you'll find a small office of half a dozen people, a private apartment for Li Ka-Shing when he visits, and a communal helipad.

Hutchison Whampoa Pty is the Hong Kong conglomerate that owns both the above, and this is what is considering buying Telefonica (UK) Ltd, which owns O2 UK.

In turn, Hutchison Whampoa Pty is owned by Cheung Kong Holdings, which is owned by Li Ka-Shing.
  • And, as another side note, you know that when you buy anything from Superdrug or Savers, your money is going to Hutchison Whampoa, right? Or if you buy a can of Sunkist... Or you get a new power line installed to a house in the South East...

And chances are your commuter train is now owned by Hutchison Whampoa, as they have also bought Eversholt Rail (who lease the rolling stock to the train companies)

And don't drink the water either, as they own Northumbrian Water, Wales and West Utilities, and part of Southern Water.
Not forgetting the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich, and Thamesport.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Don't forget UK Power Networks, which runs electricity cables in south-east England.
