Telef!nica confirmed this morning it has entered into an “exclusivity agreement” with Hutchison Whampoa that could see it offload subsidiary O2 for up to £10.25bn in cash.

On a technical note - if the deal goes through and network sharing takes place then that would be of benefit to O2 users as O2's 3G coverage is not good in rural areas where often only 2G is available.

The use of Three's 3G transmitters would considerably improve the 3G rural coverage for O2 users, and provide extra spectrum in towns/cities - as long as they don't remove too many masts like Orange did after the EE merger in 2010.

No they don't. How many times do you need to be told these are 2 completely seperate, completely different matters?

OFCOM isn't just one man in an office who can only handle one case at a time, once a deal is agreed (in either case) OFCOM (and more likely the CMA) will review the matter and make a decision to approve or refer the acquisition. At this stage OFCOM is not involved with either deal.

Have you ever worked in the industry Collabora?

Well as it was on all the news BBC and ITV and mentioned by a spokesman from OFCOM then who is right a member of OFCOM or a CHILD on MSE

it has to go to the regulator ( OFCOM) to get approval. so have you got that TROLL

    http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/jan/23/mobile-network-three-to-buy-o2
As recently as 2010, the UK had five network owners and a fiercely competitive market. But that became four when Orange and T-Mobile merged to form EE. Although the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has long said it wants to retain four competing mobile firms in the UK, the final decision on whether to let the deal go ahead will rest with European Union competition authorities in Brussels. They have previously waved through similar deals in Germany, Austria and Ireland.

    http://www.knowyourmobile.com/three/o2-buyout/23019/three-offers-ps9-billion-o2-buy-out-bid-become-uks-biggest-network
Regulator approval might not come easily, however. Three’s acquisition of O2 would be a massive state shift for the UK mobile network industry and one that regulator Ofcom might be wary of. Ofcom has a duty to maintain fair competition but also attempts to keep prices low for consumers, historically it has tried to ensure there are at least for mobile network competitors in the space in order to achieve this, but a merger could throw a serious spanner in the works. Not only that, but with talk of BT’s acquisition of EE still ongoing, these big shifts together could rock the boat rather a lot.
