Firmware Version V4.01.28
Firmware is out of date, DG834Gv3 Firmware Version 4.01.42
If you update the firmware, do it via an ethernet cable, NOT wifi.0 -
Ooops, missed it
In that case I'm pretty certain there's a line fault, for the reason I gave above.
Routerstats should work on your router for monitoring your line:-
http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm
I'd be contacting your phone provider, and tell them there's intermittent crackling on phonecalls...this should get them to check your line quickly. DON'T in the first instance mention the broadband dropping out, only do that after they have done an initial line check.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Guessing from your post time all those stats were taken either before or just after sunset. Try looking at the stats again about 9:00pm or a bit later and see if the noise margin has fallen or shows the ridiculously large number that indicates it has gone negative.
As a couple of days will have elapsed make sure the sync is still showing as close to 4Mbps. It may have resynced in the evening and established a lower speed.
Anyhow if it has resynced lower or you see a low or negative noise margin in the evening I'd start thinking about that alarm wiring. It's good no ring wire is connected but you need to check the alarm spec to see if it has an inbuilt filter or physically at the control box end to see if it is connected through anything that might be a filter.
If it only connected to the line when calling in an alarm being unfiltered probably wouldn't be a catastrophe but as it detected the faceplate removal it must be permanently wired to it.
Did the wires connected to 2&5 on the faceplate look like standard phone wire - usually the connected pair would be blue/white and white/blue (or the orange/white green/white or brown/white pairs) and not a solid colour. Alarm cable tends to be solid colour multicore and shouldn't be used to connect to phone lines as it isn't twisted pair. A long run of alarm cable rather than phone cable could pick up interference.0 -
A filtered faceplate may help with the alarm wiring, if indeed that's the issue. However using one would help eliminate it from the equation..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

It would be the way forward if the alarm is unfiltered or the wiring isn't twisted pair. I suspect it probably is filtered as there was no major change in the sync when it was reconnected but do wonder about the cable used. As you say a filtered faceplate would get rid of any noise pickup from the extension wiring.
I'm wondering if a non-technical person would be happy to fit one though - the OP mentions getting someone in to check the wiring earlier. I fitted one in the past which I got from ADSLNation. There is a link to a pdf fitting guide on their sales page - http://www.adslnation.com/products/xte2005.php which would help the OP decide if they thought they could do it OK. I don't recall if a Krone tool came with mine or if I had to get one separately but a cheap one would be needed. ### I checked and from there they are an additional purchase and called IDC tools. The cheapest @ 0.49p would be fine,

Oh while we are spending the OPs money it's worth noting that the DG834G is pretty ancient and just possibly isn't getting the best from the line that it could deliver. A newer router would offer N wireless too although at the ADSL speed being achieved that may not be a major benefit.0 -

Your guess is correct, the house was empty, but doing it at 9pm or after would get long faces from the other residents!

the wires in 2&5 were what looked like normal thin phone wires - blue/white.
It goes from the master socket up to the loft - less that 10mkwikbreaks wrote: »As you say a filtered faceplate would get rid of any noise pickup from the extension wiring.

Just got the 'Connection has been reset' message again0 -
In the stats you just posted the noise margin had gone negative again so it has almost certainly resynced with is why you saw the reset message.
If you can get a filtered faceplate fitted it's a pretty cheap option and may fix your problems. The AdslNation ones are good but you can get cheaper if that is an issue.
Check your stats now after the resync and again at about 9 or 10 this evening. Doing that shouldn't bother anybody else apart from you using a PC to do so.
If the faceplate doesn't sort it then I'd say consider a new router. PN may supply one free or post only but I'd expect them to set a fresh minimum term in return.0 -

Will try and remember to test again this evening.
