I hadn't realised that internet explorer was able to fix problems with internal phone wiring. Can you tell me where the option for doing that is as I can't seem to find it.

Try reading the thread. If you know anything at all on the subject you'd realise that your suggestion had no bearing on the issue at all.

OK - I'm back, apologies for the delay ... finally found time to check wiring/connections etc

Just to recap the details of our system:
Main line comes into the loft then down to the main BT faceplate

    We have connected 'telephonically'
    an alarm system (more later)
    Netgear Router
    Panasonic cordless phone system
    Brother network printer/scanner/fax
Abitana box which routes various cables around the house for various things - sound / TV / phone etc
BT Duet phone - for when there's a power cut!!

    So - what I did ....
    Removed the faceplate
The alarm immediately started beeping 'phone line error'
On the back of the faceplate were only 2 wires connected to 5&2
I reckon these go back to the alarm as when I reconnected the faceplate, the beeping stopped!

    Anyway - line stats here:-

All with a BT filter in place

With the router plugged into the master socket (faceplate removed)
    faceplateremoved.jpg

With the faceplate back on and router (only connected)
    Faceplate_router.jpg

Then I added the Panasonic phone
    router_phone.jpg

    Then the fax machine
    fax.jpg

    Then the Abitana box
    abitana.jpg

    Then finally the BT Duet
    Duet.jpg

All items were added in tandem in the order that I say above (I think!!)

What does it all mean

it all means it's nothing to do with your equipment .... but you have a lot plugged in, simplify where possible

Your rogue noise stat has gone, probably as a result of the router reboot, the last reboot was >33 days ago, first thing to try.

start at software, browser, virus scanner, malware , if it returns

This is correct for modern phone systems, and these are for the extension to the alarm. If you had more phone sockets, there would be more wires to terminals 2&5, in fact the same number of pairs as sockets.

I reckon these go back to the alarm as when I reconnected the faceplate, the beeping stopped! See above.

Last set of router stats required - take the faceplate off the master socket and plug the microfilter with router only attached into the test socket (the one behind the faceplate). Ignore the alarm's hissy fit for a short while.

From the stats you have posted already, I'm pretty sure there's a line fault, as your upstream attenuation is only around a quarter of your downstream attenuation - as a rough guide it should be around half. A set of stats from the test socket will confirm or otherwise.

Check which version of DG834G yours is - should be on the label or within the router's interface (where you got the stats from), if it's the right version (some of the 834Gs used a different chipset) you could run DMT or Routerstats to monitor your line's behaviour :)
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I already did that - see post 28

It says v3 on the back of the router
When logging into the router it says under Router Status

    Firmware Version V4.01.28
