I'm getting too many of these:-

The connection was reset

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

We are simple 'country folk' with a 2Meg download connection with plusnet
Win 7 Laptop

Should I be 'blaming' Plusnet, Firefox or Windows?

Of those 3 probably Plusnet. It would be their fault if there is an issue with your line to the exchange that is cause the connection to drop. Have you tested your line speed and looked at the router stats? Posting those would probably help people determine whether that is the problem.

Not done enough Traceroutes to prove anything but transatlantic traffic is as slow as treacle for me on VM cable.

Not seen it as high as 2.8 for a while ... usually about 2.25

Might need help with that :o

As I said in the OP, we are 'country folk'. 2+ miles from the exchange
There are 4 houses here, the one across the road is with BT, maybe I will ask him to speedtest.
The one 300m further up the line is also on plusnet, will maybe ask them too.
    Don't know the 4th folks.

You're going to need somebody with more expertise than me to help. By the look of it your ping times are slow anyway, and the big difference may well suggest some sort of line issue.

Comparing speeds with your neighbours may help, if you are much slower than them then it's likely to be something in the infrastructure between the exchange and your router or your own equipment, if they are similar then if there is a fault it's a more extensive one, perhaps at a pinch point on the line or at the exchange.

As BT Wholesale own the infrastructure it's unlikely that different ISPs will have much effect, it's just that you need to report the fault to your own ISP, who will then contact BT Wholesale to get it investigated by OpenReach.

That seems bad for a landline service.

That's a pretty groundless observation. Landlines can provide between a fraction of a Mbps and over 16Mbps on ADSL2+. The main deciding factor is the line length although internal wiring and line problems can cause issues.

Only the router line stats will give any clue as to whether there is a fixable problem - assuming moving house to get a shorter line is not considered to be a viable fix. Find out how to get that info here. Then post them up for comment.

Thanks kwikbreaks, that's the sort of expert help I was hoping someone would come up with.
