It's just not something I understand to buy any food that you won't use yourself. It's not something I do myself. I'm not saying it's wrong for anyone else to do it either......just that it's something I've never understood.
Yes I have been very guilty of buying other things I won't usebut I think my tot up of just how guilty at the end of last year gave me the kick up the rear I needed
But on the subject if biscuits.....take this area for example. The council has had to put a scheme in place to provide breakfasts for all primary school age children because so many children are going to school hungry without a breakfast inside them in the morning. All the free biscuits in the world won't solve that problem. People give things that they get for cheap or free and I understand that. But if it really is about helping people who have less then why not splash out on a couple of boxes of cereal? Yes it's nice for people to have things that they can't normally afford and that are considered a treat.
But plenty of people are profiting from the way we shop and spending very little feeding their own families. If they really want to help food banks.....why not use a little of the profit they are making buying things that are really needed? So that councils like ours aren't having to spend money feeding kids who could in all honesty get what they need at home.
I know it's not a popular view and that's fine. I don't expect everyone to agree and don't mind anyone who doesn't. I'm just as interested in everyone's views whether I agree or not
I think you've explained it much better in that post than your previous one, and I agree with most of what you've said above. I do buy stuff specifically for the foodbank on top of any freebies like the biscuits, plus now make sure that my fillers are useful items (smartprice, yes, but all items I would and do use myself) to donate instead of the 10p sweets that I was doing before. I'm extremely thankful for all the glitches I get, which is one of the reasons I've started doing this on a regular basis.
However, I don't think people should be knocked for donating only biscuits, if thats what they've done. Any kind of food donation is better than none in my eyes, and I'm sure it will be appreciated.
I think its really sad in this day and age that we need foodbanks, there is something wrong somewhere. But we do, and I can't see it changing any time soon unfortunately.0 -

fairclaire wrote: »As I've said, it purely my opinion. I've had my eyes opened much wider recently since starting this new job. Some of the people that are using the services provided are struggling in all sorts of ways including financially. Some of the programmes currently running are teaching people how to grow their own food and providing them with the equipment and facilities needed to do so, teaching People how to meal plan and create nutritious meals for not much money and most importantly helping people to budget and use what little money they have effectively.......something that everyone here knows is possible.
I agree that food banks have their place and are sadly needed. I do think however, if people want to 'give' to help the people that unfortunately need to use them, schemes like those mentioned above will help people more in the long term. Food banks just plug the gap temporarily. I'd personally like to see more resources being put into educating people to survive without the need for help from food banks. Ambitious?.....maybe? But the project I'm working on is succeeding and on a far bigger scale than anyone could have expected and I hope that funding for far more similar schemes can be made available in a lot more areas.
I agree that it would be positive if these resources were easily accessible for all, I would love to learn how to cook/grow veg etc.
But I do wonder if the evaluation of these projects will indicate that very specific people benefit from them. In relation to children's centres, the evaluations showed that the people who most benefited, was the people who least needed to benefit.
Although from 1940's - Maslow's hierarchy of needs is still relevant. It is a shame that social policy does not acknowledge this basic fact.
Sorry I will get off my high horse now x100 -
I doubt that anyone is interested, but can I just point out that I am NOT the Ladyshopper on hotukdeals that has been banned.
Never had a username on there ever, but curious someone decided to use that name and is now banned (on the infamous biscuit thread).0 -
