Your three figure insurance quote, I take it that's as a learner? Have you checked how that will change when you pass your test? At a guess it will treble.0

Isn't there a grace period for tax? Surely you can't be expected to tax a vehicle at the point you buy it before you drive it away?
.
There is now a 24 telephone line to sort or, also the internet, its 2015.0 -

Not always possible, though. That assumes you are travelling to pick up a car you know you are going to buy. I've sold plenty of cars and bikes to people who were on a 2-3 day expedition to see several suitable vehicles and made the decision to buy (or not) at the time they saw it.
Yes, it's possible to do all this by phone, but I can't help thinking it was a lot easier when you had a week or two of tax remaining when you bought a car and could sort the disc out when you got it home. Or even if they gave an 'official' grace period of say a week after purchase to get it taxed. Oh, but that might lose them a bit of revenue ...If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
If I bought a car with no tax, I'd risk getting it home without. After all, even if caught then the fine is £80, reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days. And thats IF you get caught. Sounds like no big deal to me.
I'm not suggesting for a second that tax evasion is a good idea, and once home I would tax the car before using it on public roads again.
The system whereby there is now never any tax on a newly purchased car (be it new or secondhand) is utterly unworkable, and will change within the next 6 months when the authorities realise the new system doesn't work as is.0
