'New' car at 16

Hi there,
So I'm 17 in February, but we've been looking around for cars to buy and then put into SORN until I have my full licence. We have now found a tidy 07 corsa and have now put a deposit on it, and we're picking it up next Wednesday.
I have a few questions about ownership, insurance and tax on the car. My dad is going to drive the car home, and I was planning to get my dad to put 1 day insurance on it and some tax just so we can safely drive it home, and then put it in SORN.
We don't yet have any documentation on the car, so we can't tax it or anything like that, but I was wondering if I could ask the dealer for the VIN number so we can tax it. We can then get some insurance on it so that my dad can safely drive it back across the bridge.
My questions is, can the car be in my name (at 16), and if so can my dad still insure and tax it?
Also, will the car have to be MOT'd again once it has come out of SORN, or can I just insure and tax it, and then drive?
Thanks for any input!

There'll be plenty of other Corsas about, why make yourself all this trouble and buy it after you've passed your test.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -
Because the corsa's are very rare in my area, and we've been looking for months, but this particular corsa it the most mechanically sound / best Nick that we've seen. It's the done thing in my area amongst my age group due to the lack of high quality second hand cars about.0

As a new driver can you afford the insurance?
Yes you can have the car in your name insured to your dad.0 -

Yes I can, I've worked most of my life (saved a lot of £), and am going with tesco bank black box so it's only a mere £944 insurance. Thanks for the answer btw!0 -
Even with it sorn you'd need to insure it, or are you willing to take the risk that a tree doesn't fall on it, or it catches fire or is stolen.....MFW OP's 2017 #101 £829.32/£5000
MFiT-T4 - #46 £0/£45k to reduce mortgage total
04/16 Mortgage start £153,892.45
MFW 2015 #63 £4229.71/£3000 - old Mortgage0 -

We live in an exceedingly safe area, and it will be locked in behind a gate with a caravan and two other cars blocking the entrance, so touch! to anyone who could lay a finger on it. It will also have cctv on it.0 -

Ok, it's a rare Corsa (?) which is mechanically sound and thus you can't wait.
So this is the legal method of buying/collecting it. First of all it MUST have an MOT. Secondly your dad will be able to take out temporary insurance to enable him to drive it back but will need to carry a cover note with him as it will possible not be on the MIB.

And lastly you will have to tax it before driving it from the seller's location as such, there is no point SORN-ing unless you don't intend to drive it until March 1st.

As long as the car isn't hundreds of miles away I'd save the hassle and ask the dealer to deliver it - maybe offer them a lift back afterwards if that helps them.0
