will this discount apply to all accounts already with them or do you have to move tarrifs to gain discount?

I assume you are an existing Scottish Power customer.

If you log in to the Scottish Power website and go to "My Account" you should see a "Get A Quote" link. This will tell you which deal is best for you. It will almost certainly be the March 2016 deal if you get electricity and gas from them and pay by monthly direct debit.

As far as I can see there is no penalty for signing up for this fixed price deal because there is no penalty if you later (even next month!) switch to another Scottish Power tariff, and this Feb 2016 rate is cheaper than their variable rate and you get the new rate now.

If the cost per kwh and/or the daily standing charge is less than the tariff that you are on then yes, if it's not then no.

    Thanks for that,
I have just worked it out based on my last years gas and elec, and works out the new deal for feb 2016, would be about 80p/month cheaper based on last 12 months useage. But when i put it into 'change my tariff' and go to the new direct debit amount it puts it up by £30/month. Think I will stick on tariff i am on.

It does do that depending on whether you are in credit or debit etc. However, after you switch you can go in and reset your DD amount. As long as their system thinks the new amount you choose will be roughly enough.
  • Just logged in to Scottish Power and I see a message saying the switch is in progress. Great. However the first paragraph reads:

"Right now we’re busy behind the scenes making sure your switchover to ScottishPower is underway, it should take up to five weeks to complete. We expect to start your supply on 3rd May, 1997."

I rang and they said: "oh, ignore that date."

And I'm switching between SP tariffs, not to SP and I know from previously that if you're switching between Scottish Power tariffs it takes 2 or 3 days not 5 weeks. Ah well.

Towards the end of November we switched to online fixed price January 2016.... For some reason Scottish power didn't take any payment until the start of January.

Because of this, and the fact its been cold, we are now £250 in debit to them.

We want to switch to the died price until February 2016 tariff, because the unit costs are slightly cheaper.

But when I tried to make the switch it said it would increase my DD (presumably to compensate for the debt)

It seems to me that when you switch tariff they consolidate your existing debt (if any) into the new DD, and skip the first months payment.

Is that right? We don't want to switch tariff and end up skipping another month's payment, thereby ending up further in debit.

I'd rather they just took the money to settle the debt, and then start off on the new tariff from scratch.

I can't see why it should take even that long. My own tariffs with my energy provider were changed literally within hours, phoned at 5pm and the new tariff came into effect after midnight.

That happened to me too: I switched between tariffs last year and the next DD did not get taken. There was something buried in the small print on their website about it.

But on the most recent switch (before this latest one which is still in progress) they didn't miss a DD. I don't know why, but perhaps it depends on how close to your DD date you switch?

If you switch and they miss taking a DD you could go online and make a one-off payment for the missed amount.

  • I,m with SP on dec 2015 deal, yes the new The February Fix 2016 is cheaper by £35, but Eon v.14 is £85 cheaper , so opted for them,
if prices drop or I find a better deal down the line, its only £5 exit fee anyway
