Someone died, yes but someone murdered is a no. I have a good imagination at night with the lights off!

    I think I'm in love...

I'm in the 'No' camp! After watching "American Horror Story" I'd be totally creeped out by the slightest noise!
  • Wow thanks for all the replies - both serious and comical :rotfl:

So what I've managed to find out is that it was a domestic violence case that happened about three years ago. It wasn't a big publicity case but there was a bit of local news interest (found a few pages on the local news website about it). Not sure actually who currently owns it (estate agents bit vague, which is what initially aroused my suspicions and I started having a look about and ended up finding the address on the news page).

It's an awful thing to have happen totally but it could have happened anywhere else. I guess as pointed out it could be a worry if the chap gets out of prison and then decides to turn up and a knock at the door... Or being known locally as the person who bought "that house"...

In these circumstances, no, I don't think it would bother me.

I agree with others comments if it had been notorious or big publicity etc.

I wouldn't, simply because you had to ask the question. If even a small % are put off your market is reduced if you come to sell.

I would also not feel comfortable as I am a bit of a wuss too!

When the OP is ready to sell, a lot more time is likely to have passed and others may not even remember what had once happened in that house. New potential buyers may never know.

it will put me off as the person who got murdered there, their sole could still be the property as it can't get to the other side. The smell of death will be lingering in the air for quite some time.

The smell of any fish, even sole does linger

    Sorry - I couldn't resist. :p

As for the original question, I'm really not sure how I would feel about it if I knew. It is likely though that many of us live in houses where people have perhaps not been murdered but have had unhappy deaths, maybe what we don't know won't worry us.

One of my distant relatives was murdered by Christie at 10 Rillington Place. Just looked it up and the whole street was demolished. I remember my dad watching the film about it with real intensity - only found out when I was older why he showed such an interest in the film. Wasn't something really spoken about in the family.
Don't think I could live in a place where I knew something like this had happened.

  • They are just curious but there could always be the odd nut job.

If there was even the slightest possibility that someone might try to squirrel my nuts away, I would not live there.

There is a good chance that many houses of reasonable vintage will have hosted rapes, child abuse, domestic violence, drunkenness, death, burglary, misery, loneliness, or some other such misfortune.

Our previous owners had a messy divorce with him becoming a her, but we have built a happy family home. Life, and a house, are exactly what you make of them.
