What happens if DATA allowance is exceeded?

No need to worry about exceeding data allowance, just set data limit to warn you - I set mine at 80% of allowance, phone will let you know in plenty of time to avoid charges, you can even set to stop using mobile data when allowance reached but that is not infallible due to delays in mobile data being registered by billing computer.
Can you add more if you're getting near the limit but need to keep using it?0 -

not sure about Three
I use Tesco Mobile

they dont have all you can eat plans, but you can add extra as one offs or monthly0 -
Yes, either pay for extra data and reset the limits on your phone, found under settings, Data usage or reset the cut off limit without buying extra allowance in advance and pay the extra charges levied but that will work out a lot more expensive0

I'm also thinking that if Three works out and I like it, I can get the same package but on a 12 month contract for £15 a month, which would be great.
600 minutes is more than enough for me. It's just the data that's an issue. I'm trying to find out how much data I've used with Virgin over the past year, which will give me insight into how much I need with Three.
Although, 4G uses more data than 3G, right?
Yes with Giffgaff you can set it to auto renew. I'm with them and I would def recommend.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -

All of the answers here are wrong.
I honestly can't believe that no one here has posted the right answer.
On Three you can not go over your data allowance. When you hit the 4GB limit your data will stop and you will not be allowed to use more. You will then have the option to purchase more (e.g £5 for 1GB).
Well now I'm confused then. That's what the deal was when I was with o2 a few years ago. If you ran out it just wouldn't work until you paid for extra or the next month's allowance rolled around.
I can't seem to find facts about this on the Three website...0 -

so Three are wrong too then
http://www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM/Plans_for_phones then under your plan click view plan details and then click Three Price guide, then look through the guide for data roaming prices0 -

I use the official virgin app "Virgin Mobile My Account" works well on Nexus 4 Avaliable FOC Google Play apps0 -

I think the operative word where you are reading is "roaming". What page are you reading about roaming?
Page 8 says:Once you’ve used up your data or voice units allowance, you may be able to buy an Add-on to allow you to continue making voice calls or using data. If you find that you need more allowances than your plan offers, you can contact us to talk about your options or to change your price plan to one with increased allowances.
It also says:Control your spend by choosing to block any out of bundle spending.

but that doc gives all their prices and charges. so i was referring too ZhugeEX who stated everyone was wrong.
even Cuilean pointed out another Three page that give charges, so in effect ZhugeEX was saying even Three were wrong0
