What happens if DATA allowance is exceeded?

Hi All,
I'm moving from an 'unlimited' data 3G package SIM only deal with Virgin to a 4GB limit on data with Three.
It turns out my 'unlimited' was actually limited to 3.5GB anyway.. but all it did if I went over was go very slowly..
I'm worried that if I move to this Three package and I go over the 4GB they'll start charging me huge amounts for what I use after that.
Does anyone know how it works with Three? And how it works with all the networks?
The SIM only package I'm looking at is a monthly contract, £18, 4GB data, 600mins and unlimited texts.
Any advice? Thanks!

I'm on Three, and their page about what happens if you exceed your data allowance is here
To save you clicking, it says:What happens when you run out of data?
When you've nearly used up your data allowance, we'll send a text to your dongle or MiFi to let you know.
If you're on Pay As You Go and you run out of data, we'll redirect you to your My3 account to buy another top-up. Using your My3 account is free and topping up is quick and easy.
If you have a contract with us and you go over your data allowance, you'll still be able to access the internet but you'll be charged 10.2p for every megabyte (MB) of data you use.
Prior to Three, I was with T Mobile. They didn't warn me I'd exceeded my limit one month when my phone decided to download every available email over 3G, and allowed me to merrily rack up data charges. Thankfully, I happened to log onto the My T Mobile website to check something, and saw my bill had gone through the roof. Lesson learned - mobile data turned off when I get home and join my home wifi.
I have a friend on EE, and when she went over her allowance, they just cut her off and she had a fancy 2G brick for a while :rotfl:© Cuilean 2005. Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental.0 -
you will be charges 19.8p per MB over your allowance
click here http://www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM/Plans_for_phones then under your plan click view plan details and then click Three Price guide, then look through the guide for data roaming prices0 -
I'd rather it just went into rubbish show mode until the next month kicks in... I'd scared of being charged huge amounts over my allowance and need to keep my monthly mobile cost within the allowance..
Does everyone do it this way? And does it happen the same if I'm on a monthly contract?0 -

I guess I should start by looking into how much data I currently use.. Anyone know how to do that on Virgin Mobile? There doesn't seem to be a total when I look at my bill online.. I'd have to add up each individual use which seems crazy...0

Yes. And it's good but I'm hesitant about a PAYG bundle for some reason. I'm not sure why. Can I set it to automatically renew each month?
I'm also thinking that if Three works out and I like it, I can get the same package but on a 12 month contract for £15 a month, which would be great.
600 minutes is more than enough for me. It's just the data that's an issue. I'm trying to find out how much data I've used with Virgin over the past year, which will give me insight into how much I need with Three.
Although, 4G uses more data than 3G, right?0 -
No need to worry about exceeding data allowance, just set data limit to warn you - I set mine at 80% of allowance, phone will let you know in plenty of time to avoid charges, you can even set to stop using mobile data when allowance reached but that is not infallible due to delays in mobile data being registered by billing computer.0
