Bank has overdrawn me

Hi all I need some help I checked my bank this morning and had £158 under available balance, so I drew 150 out and now I'm -39 I am seriously annoyed as wouldn't of drawn it out if I'd of known I didn't have it, I cannot afford any charges, I have never asked for nor do I want an overdraft, the fact the AVAILABLE balance was 158 made me think that's what I had left in and it actually let me draw it out the bank machine, is there anything g I can do about this as I have 20 going in tomorrow but 10 should be coming out for water rates
this has never happend to me before, the bank is santander. Any advice is much appreciated

Well some of the discrepancy will be due to the DD due out tomorrow (which of course you knew about). The rest may be due to recent debit card transactions (which you should have known about?
You need to sit down and reconcile your debit card receipts etc with your statement and see where you went wrong.
Your bank may have a safety buffer with regard to charges. Have you checked if they do, and how much it is?
And finally, if this is a first offence then the bank may refund any charges if you're polite and apologetic.0 -

In fairness, some banks are extremely misleading and show an "available balance" that includes overdraft prominently, with the actual balance nice and small.
They are doing this on purpose so that customers who are not aware of the trick get overdrawn.
If I were OP I'd vote with my feet.0 -

No need to be rude, it's never happend to me before.... I'm just confused as to why it was under available balance... my actual balance was 400 and somthing but with bills I have paid etc this is taken out of my available balance so I know I don't have it to withdraw, seems like a con and don't think it's right, anyway I posted this for advice so yeah, thanks for your great advice it's really helpful0 -
If you have not spent the £150 pay some back in.0

Hi,
you may have used your debit card recently which takes about three days to be deducted.
I see their unarranged overdraft fee is £6 a day, so contact them this morning.0 -
6 a day isn't too bad thought it was more than that, I wouldn't know as never happend before, I have emailed them and will ring them later when I get a minute, thankyou.0

It could be for a retailer that has taken a debit card payment which didn't notify the bank at the time of the transaction. The bank can only move it out of your available balance when they are told. Keep an eye on what you use your card for and make sure it is accounted for. Retailers can even take funds up to 6 months after the transaction.
Maybe even consider using this account only for DD's/bills and use a 2nd account for spending on a debit card and withdrawing cash. Transferring £x amount when you get paid. Hi,
mmm, aye, £6 isn't bad, but for only £39, if you are overdrawn for a week it's £42, more than what you owe.
Have a polite word with them about the 'available balance', and fact that this is your first time.
They might waive charges, and you will be more careful in future.
Good luck.0
