Bank has overdrawn me

  • Hi,

if calling, try this freephone number: 0800 174635, no point using the 0845 number when you are trying to save money.
  • When OH fills up at Tesco's that debit takes up to 3 working days to show debited off available balance. (Barclays BTW). However with them if you pay money in by counter or from savings before 3.30pm they do not charge any OD fees.

Plenty of time to email them and do 3 or 4 posts here but not a minute to ring them?

I'm -39.......I have 20 going in tomorrow but 10 should be coming out for water rates......

With all of tonights transactions having gone through, check your account now, that will tell you what happened.

Did you receive those £20 you were expecting? Apart from the £10 water rates, what else was deducted: a DD or SO you had forgotten about, a recent purchase or is it a transaction you do not recognize?

If you recognize the transaction it is not the banks fault. If you do not recognize it, contact your bank.

I emailed last night when they was closed, I have a young child to look after and get ready so don't have time to be sat on hold for ages.. now why is it you even bothered to comment with absolutely nothing helpful to say? Maybe you have too much time on your hands.

Thanks the 20 has gone in but water rates haven't come out so I'm assuming they have tried but failed with it being - it is -19 now i think it could be because my partner took my card at the weekend and drew some money out, for some reason it has not showed up until last night, he did tell me but not how much so that's where the confusion has come from, I do think it's bad of the bank though, I will defiantly be more careful in the future, thanks to all the helpful people I do appreciate it :)

OP, you have made the mistake quite a few people make - namely to rely on the "available balance" instead of keeping a record yourself of your spend. No bank can know what you really spent, only you do. It's not the bank that makes you go into an overdraft - you do.

Many retailers have a floor limit below which they don't bother checking with the bank whether you have enough money, and they won't tell the bank for a few days. For example, I bought some pens and envelopes on my debit card in the village Post Office on Friday, £6.98. As of 10 minutes ago, there was no sign of that purchase on my online transactions, so the PO hasn't yet reported the purchase to the bank. My available balance obviously now shows £6.98 more than I know I really have. This is not an error by the bank, nor is it a trick.

Which transaction(s) tipped you into the overdraft? Spend on your debit card? A DD, an SO?

In fairness, some banks are extremely misleading and show an "available balance" that includes overdraft prominently, with the actual balance nice and small.

They are doing this on purpose so that customers who are not aware of the trick get overdrawn.

If I were OP I'd vote with my feet.
The OP didn't have an overdraft, so their available balance didn't include any overdraft. But leaving that aside, all banks include an arranged overdraft in the available balance. There is no trickery involved. Moving bank achieves nothing. Keeping your own records of your spending is the way forward. I do hope they have started to teach this in schools now.

I just think it's so wrong banks can do this, time for a change I think.
What would you like banks to do instead? Stop paying your DDs and SOs? Stop you from using your card if you are within £x of going into the red? None of this would really work, would it. You are right, it is time for a change - - - you need to assume responsibility for what you spend. This isn't being rude, this is just good advice.

6 a day isn't too bad thought it was more than that,
I think £6 a day is an awful lot of money so I would get my account back into the black immediately.

As it happened the first time to you, if you have a polite word with Santander and explain you had forgotten about some transactions, they will let you off without charges. But don't try to complain about the available balance being wrong - it wasn't wrong, you were wrong.
  • Even with this 'available balance' that we have nowadays, it is still not possible to be 100% sure if we do have this money available, as some places do not instantly take the money... the only way to be sure is to keep a running balance youself

If you have a chance this morning try to ring the bank to cancel the direct debit. It you just leave it and it fails, then it will be a lot more than a £6 fee, you will be charged for a failure of direct debit which will add another £10 i think (I could be wrong, i'm sure someone will correct me if I am) and they won't pay the direct debit either so you could incur a charge from the company too (not sure if your water company would do this, my phone compnay do)

The last time I emailed Santander on a Friday, I got a reply on the Tuesday, which was longer than they stated I would wait for a response.

Not trying to patronise you by the way, just offering some advice.
