Who is responsible for fence repair

Options
Lost some fence panels yesterday at the bottom of the garden between me and my neighbour's. I tried to upload a pic but as I am a newbie here it won't let me My neighbour's house and garden is a mirror image of mine.

Am I right in assuming that both sides share the costs in the repair. As a home owner and single, I have never had to deal with this scenario before and I ask you good peeps because my neighbours are .....how can I say..... not the best, especially the "Mrs" who will no doubt try and blame me for the weather lol. Just want to be armed with the right info before I discuss with them what to do and how to do it :) Btw, it won't be an insurance claim because from inspection we just need 2 panels and 1 post

Many thanks

Whose fence is it - yours, theirs or joint?

If it's yours, you should repair it.

If it's joint, neither of you should do anything with it without the agreement of the other but you can't make the neighbour pay up.

If it's their fence, it's entirely down to the neighbours whether it's repaired or left as it is.

haven't a clue as to ownership of fence, from reading up, sometime, the way the panels are erected give a clue but not on this occasion. Will my Deeds tell me?

If it's their fence and they don't want to fix it you could always put up your own fence on your side of the boundary line.

  • Check your deeds - they normally have a ''T'' within the boundary of the house who holds the responsibilty

I was in the exact same boat as you yesturday - unfortunately responsibilty for our broken fence lay with me, so spent the day at B&Q and fixing fences

This is my first home, have been here for 15yrs, and it's not something I have ever had to tackle before.

Is it also standard these days that I am responsible for the fencing on my left?

Upload the picture somewhere like tinypic or posting.org, get the link it will provide you and click the yellow square above the posting box (the one that looks like a mountain landscape picture) next to the quote 'bubble'.

The photo will then show in your post.

  • No there is no standard rule , sometimes it is left, right, bottom or all three. There should definately be something to denote this on your deeds

In my house I have been lumbered with all three fences in our garden..which is just pants..;/

I tried that with photobucket but it just gives me a message that because I am a newbie I can't add one cus of spamming
