    Can anybody sack an MP?

    Tbe Queen probably can.

They can serve from prison though. Bobby Sands did IIRC.

I'm less sure of this than when I first of Carmichael's admission. Initially, from the second hand reports I had the impression that he not only leaked the email but that he had acttually made it up and hence the accusations of lying.

Perhaps someone can clear that up, but my understanding at the moment is that he only leaked the report.

I'm not generally a fan of whistle blowers and this is not an exception; anyone who leaks a document is guilty of betraying a confidence and that's a non-no for me. Maybe in cases of true public interest (real need to know) perhaps but I am not so sure that is the case here. So I think that whistle blowers should face the consequences of their action. It is serious, but on the level of extreme spin, not a capital offence.

If it is shown that he falsified the email then I do think he is unfit for election, but that has yet to be proven.

What he did, however, is par for much of our political life nowadays and if lying (where I refer to his lie of denying he had allowed the leak) pails into insignificance compared with much more serious lies that all politicians foist on us from time to time.

Sturgeon is no exception to the cult of political lying and before she calls on others to consider their positions she should look at herself, as should others.

So as things stand, I think that Carmichael should remain in his post.

If Carmichael is forced to resign as a result of this business then I suggest he is followed in his example by all SMPs, WMPs and UK MPs.

I think its more the fact he knew the whole thing was a made up lie, he then lied about it on public record to the extent that it was only after the cost of the ( allegedly) £1.4m investigation into the matter when he was caught he put his hands up and said yep it was me, he did all that whilst Scottish Sec ...

If it was just the lie ... whilst that is wrong and should be punished most deff ... it isnt as bad as doing it in the position he held whilst constantly denying it until he is caught, then admitting he was fully to blame and takes full responsibility,

unless he resigns he isnt taking full responsibility it is just empty words.

I find the whole cost of the inquiry scandalous ( that is if it did cost the £1.4million) in todays' current economic climate these things should not be needed, the consequence of his lies could have an effect on people.

A leaked civil service memo which alleged the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wanted David Cameron to win the general election was an “accurate” record of a conversation with a French official, an investigation has concluded.

The former Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael admitted he had agreed to leak the memo to a newspaper during the election campaign after his involvement was exposed by a Cabinet Office inquiry.

But, significantly, the inquiry concluded that the memo itself was genuine and “an accurate record of the conversation that took place between him (the civil servant) and the French Consul General”.

So Sturgeon did want a Tory government, and lied about it.

    Should she now resign?

No. She is just one of many politicians who have lied.

Regarding my earlier remarks about a new thread - I started it as

"How will the economy be affected by SNP MPs; will it be for richer or for poorer and for whom?"

There is room there, I hope, for all sides of the argument although I admit my own bias.

Except it doesn't prove it does it. It states it's an accurate transcript of a conversation between two people both absent from the meeting, a conversation which admits doubts about its own veracity.

Another example of poor reporting - wish I was a churnalist like this guy getting paid for sweet FA in this instance. :D

I deploy such leaking of info.

However, whether the report was accurate or not the undoubted truth is that a evil tory government is in the SNP best interest and I'm sure Nicola is intelligent to realise that.

It`s not up to you or me, under our system it`ll be up to his constituents in 5 years time. On balance that seems reasonable.

Yes I agree, but it would be an interesting conundrum for her if the Tory Government did well - we'll have to wait on that one; I don't take anything for granted, least of all the SNP not doing badly
