I think there is a general mistrust of any Nationalist party Gen, be it Welsh, Scottish, Irish or English.

UKIP are a Nationalist party like the SNP, although they avoid using the word, unsurprisingly.

    Yup, I agree.

The English have never taken to Nationalist parties. The NF was a damp squib as the BNP have been after them. Prior to that Moseley and his blackshirts were widely hated and condemned.

Given that Sinn Fein and the IRA have provided the English with their chief exposure to Irish nationalism, you can see why there'd be some nervousness at celtic nationalism.

Nationalism is a dirty word in England and only really expressed through sport. St George's Day usually passes me by without me noticing it despite the best efforts of the pubs to persuade people to get drunk. There is no English national holiday nor any real desire for one.

The English don't like or want Nationalism and if Labour try to enforce it on them there may well be a significant backlash against it.

On the Daily Politics today they explained that the nature of the Fixed Term parliament we have now has changed the dynamic of the election process when it comes to forming a government from a minority position.

We might be in uncharted waters.

On R4 yesterday a commentator was saying that coalition is set to become the new normal... last time round, none of us knew we were voting for a coalition, and wouldn't have dreamt that Clegg would align to Cameron. This time around we're all ready for it. Which is why it was good to see how the minor parties handled it.

What made Sturgeon so good, imo, was seeing the difference between her and the Plaid candidate. For the latter, it felt all about Wales. Whereas Sturgeon carefully crafted her arguments to appeal to the wider audience without going off message re Scottish Indpependence. She also didn't fluff her words and wasn't flustered. Nor was she afraid to challenge the big guns. That's why for me she gave the best performance.

No point in speculating about something that may not even come to pass.

Do you apply this standard to every political discussion, or just pull it out when it suits an agenda?

The point of speculating is that's it's speculating.

But the whole point of this thread is to speculate about politics????
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

I think she conveys the left of centre message as well as anybody.

Whether you buy that depends on how left / right you are on the spectrum.

Both the SNP and Plaid spokes persons were academic for me; I can't exactly vote for them.

I am better off paying attention to those I can vote for.

Have you actually read the thread title?

The point of the thread was about economic subsidy, and political parties leveraging their position for increasing that subsidy.

It morphed (as they often do) into a rant line.

Sturgeon won't influence my opinion at all, I just felt she performed best. I am pretty centrist, so to the right of her. Which is probably why the one whose message resonated best with me was Clegg. Having said that, I'm not voting for his party either, as here that would be a totally wasted vote.

Let's ignore the thread title completely as it has almost nothing to do with the opening post.

The purpose of this thread is to bash Scotland. I think we just need to combine it with an anti-immigration thread and it's perfect fodder for the UKIP representatives to continue push their middle-Englander agenda.

This obsession with left, right and centrist is ridiculous. It's from an age that is long bygone. It's a relic of our polititcal system and a complete irrelevance.

You're stuck in the past, which is why you're leaning towards Nigel.

Yeah right... I'm leaning towards Nigel in the sense that anyone who isn't a commie is leaning towards Nigel. I wouldn't touch that gurning loon with your bargepole.
