A new month and no posts for about a week and a half. I am well and enjoying life. I hope that everybody else is well and sober.

Hi Brodev and everyone. I still subscribe to this thread even though I never even think about alcohol nowadays (well only when I'm making sure we have enough in for OH's nightly can). I'm in my little flat in Southport that we bought in June and life is like one long holiday. I do go home now and then but can't wait to get back!

The money I'm saving since giving up is paying for the service charge on the flat and most of the water rates, so I have a concrete "reward" for my abstinence! :T (I wasn't drinking enough to cover the Council Tax too - nobody could drink THAT much lol :rotfl:).

Hope everyone else is in good form (nearly wrote good spirits but maybe not :o).
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

Hello, I've lurked on this thread for a long time as I am concerned about my drinking.

I'm 35 and married with a 2 year old son.

I don't know how to describe my drinking, wine is my poison, and DH & I share a bottle maybe 3/4 times a week. Sometimes though I never know when to stop and have even ended up going to the all night garage for more wine in my pyjamas! :o

I just feel that I need and want to stop and DH and I have said before that we will stop but then one of us has a bad day and out comes the corkscrew!

Reading all your posts makes me want to do this and be proud of myself!

Hi Joanne welcome into the sunlight . I would agree that going in your pyjamas is not the best of signs but it is good that you recognise this yourself. I see that you talk about "WE will stop" and there is nothing wrong with that but it can be a bit onerous on both. It may be better if YOU decide to stop whether DH does or not and then you only have yourself to concern you. Good Fortune

Hello Joanne, welcome to this incredibly supportive group of friends. If you get the time to read the whole thread there are loads of useful tips about distraction techniques etc. It is not all about AA although that works for some people.

I'd suggest a good starting point would be making yourself work out and write down how much your habit is costing you, and set an achievable target to save for something completely frivolous that you really want, like a lovely holiday or a new outfit. That way every time you fancy a glass or two you can ask yourself whether you fancy it enough to defer your holiday or shopping spree for an extra few days.

Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life, so good luck with your endeavours. We will all be here to help with advice or support when things get a bit tough.

Hi Brodev/Bogof Babe, Thanks for your replies.

    :)

I've done a lot of thinking over the past few days, and done what you suggested Bogof Babe, I've worked out what gets spent on wine and although not a massive amount it soon as up per week!:o

We had been thinking of a holiday for ourselves and DS so we will be booking in September and its my job to get our spending money together, which without spending money on wine, is achieveable.

I feel really positive and the fact that I have got to this point in the week without a glass of wine is really good for me as work is stressful at the moment.

It will be Friday that is my real test, as my Friday nights have consisted of wine and a big bag of nuts for as long as I can remember (apart from being pregnant!)

I'll post back on Friday night and let you know how I'm getting on!

    Love to all J xx

For Friday night treat yourself to a bottle of Schloer (sp?), or if you prefer something less sweet maybe cranberry juice. Drink it out of a wine glass if it makes you feel less deprived. Trust me, you will enjoy it equally well in the knowledge that you are doing something for you, and for the family.

Also you'll get up bright and fresh on Saturday morning, which has to be a bonus to start the weekend with! :j

Great news about the holiday, it will be a fitting reward for your efforts.

I'm in limbo at the moment - nothing is changing, and I'm still feeling bad. Trying to find a way out of the hole, but its all a bit daunting at the moment. Came off medication, now back on it. Struggling still, can't/won't get better.

Hi Feelie, sorry to hear that you are not good. All I can say is that I believe in your ability to hang on in there. I can send you a cyber cuddle ((((((Feelie))))) but it is not the same as a real one. I suggest that you go with your doctor as to the meds as he is most likely to know best. Sometimes getting better takes a long time, I know it did with me and that I had to be treated for depression for a while. The unfortunate thing about alcoholism is that you are not immunised from other illnesses by it. I had to live with my alcoholism and my depression for some years although I have not suffered from depression for many years now.
Hello to everybody else. I hope you are all as happy as you want to be.
