Don't you feel proud of yourself for getting through your darkest hour? It should have given your willpower a real boost. As for tonight, it really is true that you can have a good time while keeping in full control of your faculties, and in fact I prefer it now. There are some lovely non-alcoholic drinks available, or just ask for orange squash, and save the money in your treats fund :). I'd suggest you say you will buy your own drinks rather than getting involved in rounds, which might be expensive, and not fair if you're on soft drinks.

That's brilliant news Rach, he must have seen the light! Perhaps he is one like myself who didn't really have a problem once I'd made my mind up. Hope he keeps up the good resolution. Offer to make him his favourite meals if he sticks to his promise.

  • Hi Just wanted to introduce myself. Have been reading this forum for a little while. Have a bit of an adictive personality and suffered from bulimia chronically when I was in my teens until early twenty (approx 7 years) and then started to sort myself out and learn to eat properly and sensibly again. Took years. I'm still quite controlling with food but have'nt been bullimic for decades. Thank goodness. Teeth all gone and now have a mouth full of porcelain. Well I read a book by Clarissa Dickenson Write (not sure spelt correctly) in it she said when she was in rehab that most people who have adictions shouldn't replace them with other substances - whether it be alcohol or drugs, antidpressants etc because of our adictive personalities. I think personally she may be right as I have now been trying to give up alcohol as it doesn't make me a great person. I don't think I've ever been ableto tolerate it very well. Anyhow stopped 17th November 2008. Struggle to begin with and now miss red wine big time. It's so difficult to give up alcohol as its everywhere. Just wanted to say hello and wish everyone well with their endeavours

Hi Maizie, nice to meet you :) I agree that people with addictions should replace them. I'm 'cross-addicted' - I cycle through various addictions. Technically, I'm an alcoholic, compulsive-overeater, self-harmer and love addict, and I've got a tendancy to abuse drugs. I've learnt that I've got to solve the root problems, otherwises I'll just keep giving up one thing and picking up another.

Today I am 15 months sober.

  • Hi Feelingood,
Well done 15 months that's great. I find that when I drink it tends to depress me and my moods are variable. I now find that I feel more positive and in control. Have a couple of friends that I used to socialize with but now feel that I have to distance myself from them as they both enjoy their alcohol. I think these people think I'm batty for giving up. I do miss a drink and I think I'll find the summer (long evenings) difficult but really don't want to give up this time. I know my willpower is pretty strong as giving up bulimia on my own was tough but alcohol is such a sociable drug.

Hi Rach, good to hear from you again. I too hope your OH succeeds this weekend. As well as crossing my fingers I also try to keep my hopes high and my expectations low, I find it leads to a pleasant life if things go the way I wanted and less disappointment if they don't. Are you going to treat yourself to something nice this weekend? :D
That's life, it's just the way it is :)

but he has decided he wants to stop(without a word from me this week :) ) as he wants to one day have a business (he wants to make us millionaire's, but dont we all?) and has said that he knows he has knows chance of even making any business plans whilst he is relying on alcohol.
so hopefully he can stick to it. :)
