A happy and sober Xmas to everybody. We had a houseful of Portuguese and Brits for Xmas Eve dinner last night. Like Bogof i was the taxi at the end. I can be funny about this at times. If I think I am being taken for granted then I refuse. The only people I do this with are my (grown up) children. It was my own fault as I had difficulty in saying no. They have learned to be diplomatic and ask so everything is fine now but there have been a couple of problems in the past.
Today I am having another housefull and my poor wife is running around like a maniac mother hen, but she is enjoying every minute.

Lol Brodev i'm the same. the Xmas work doo was a nightmare i wanted to leave about 2.5 hours before everyone i had offered to drive home did...

we're a bunch of desmonds here aint we :)

have a good day im off to go over my brothers soon then round some friends house for later.
If i upset you don't stress, never forget that god aint finished with me yet.

As a former poster on the original Alcohol thread started by Beer, I would like to give my dear Friend Mich a mention, who I made friends with because of being here due to having an Alcoholic Mum. Sadly both of them have passed in the last two years and I would like to say thank you and Happy New Year to all those who helped me through both the loss of Mich and my Mum. Beer, Edilass, Westie and Al amongst others and of course my friend for life Gentlepurr. Good Luck all the posters on this thread in 2009, past, present and future.

Nice to see you back Maria. Sorry to hear about Mich. I have often thought that this was of the disadvantages of meeting people online. If you don't see them for a while you have no idea why. Sometimes I think that there may be someone out there who may be reticent to reappear and there isn't anything that we can do to encourage them ase don't know that they are there. In real life I have seen people lurking outside meetings and with a little encouragement have come in.
I had a very pleasant christmas but awoke this morning to find that we had no water. There are 9 of us here and no water first thing was not good. I dressed and went to see what I could find out. I met others doing the same as me but together we came up with nothing. I returned home a hero however as in my absence the water had been restored. I may tell everybody later that it had nothing to do with me :D

    Hi Brodev

Hope you are well, I must say I would rather be in Portugal with no water than London with to much! :D

Well my first term at uni is over and I`m sweating on the exam results. One so far - 95% for Physics. Pretty pleased with that. And my daughters have not wrecked my house.
My 19 year old stayed at the Covent Garden Travelodge last week. She wanted to do some writing and said that wine helps. When I `phoned her later, she told me that she was wandering around London in her pyjamas (coat on) trying to find something to eat. I suppose she has to make her own mistakes, but even I didn`t do that.
Have a sober New Years Eve, but don`t get too smug. According to AA, it is a common time for a slip afterwards.

That sounds risky suffolkb, I hope your daughter was safe. Shame on the Travel Lodge if they don't have any means of getting fed, even if just a vending machine. Well done on your exam results, it seems we have a genius in our midst! :T

I take on board about temptation but so far so good. On Christmas Eve we went to a small get together where the drink was flowing, and my OH kept telling everyone "she's driving" whenever I refused alcohol and asked for a soft drink. It annoyed me a bit so I said "I wouldn't be drinking even if I wasn't driving", which of course lead to some rather amazed reactions.

I don't care if I looked smug, it's my liver and if they want to wreck theirs that's up to them! :rotfl:

Yes, daughter was fine. Her mother wasn`t too keen on her being alone as she says DD is not street-smart. Youngest daughter agrees and says she is a street-idiot. She could have bought a sandwich when she bought the wine, but that would have been too sensible.

Some times others try and feel the "embrassement" for us when we dont drink huh bogofbabe. i have had it. i went to the pub in the village i grew up on Xmas day and most of the locals are great there is one however who doesnt seem to get me not drinking. always shouting out across the room "still on the wagon lewt?" i dont take any notice really but can be irratating after 4-5 times in the same visit.

the landlord there brought me a drink which was something i never thought would happen we had a pretty much love hate hate relationship in years gone by.

I remember making ammends to him once i was about 1 year clean and he was amazed i had not had a drink for a year, asked if i just smoked weed now (caught me so many times in his toilets) and he said he needed a sit down when i told him i didnt do that now. its great not to fear the response of anyone leastthe person serving me when i walk in now. whih to be hnest aint really that much. if theres boxing or im over and my mate is there.

Anyway i hope you all have a good new year. i'm braving town tonight after a couple of parties at friends. which will be interesting. doubt i'll be home much after one though.

I'm only going out as the wife likes to have a dink and a dance and her mates have all moved home to czech so she wont be going there like last year. tomorro =w i will spend some time writting a big gratatute list and also a few to do things for the year.

have a good one guys.

Hi Lewt, great post. Yes it is almost like they are apologising for us not drinking, which is ironic when you think of it, i.e. how much more would they have to apologise if we were paralytic?

There was a topic on people who have given up or are planning to give up on the Radio 5Live phone in this morning (Victoria Derbyshire's show, if you want to "listen again". I missed the start of the item but it must have been about 10.30 I think). The bit I did hear was really heart lifting, so many people "seeing the light" and never looking back. Some of them seemed stunned to find that there is life without a glass of booze in your hand, and a good life it is too.

Here's to a happy, healthy (and wealthy!), sober 2009 for all of us. Cheers! xx
