Hi everyone,
Jo4 hope all goes well for you, glad your mum had positive outcome .
Mavvymoo I think the plastic bags are chargeable for all large retailers, ( with over 250) employees. So small shops would be exempt. But if you buy a coat or large purchase from most high St stores you will need to provide a bag. Even flower bags and small bags will be chargeable.
I am glad I will be off work when the legislation comes in as customers are already making a fuss!
I have always avoided using plastic bags even years ago when I went to Morrisons they would put yogurts in separate bags then meat then loose veg even though I said don't  so I would stand at the bottom of the till taking them all back out and putting them in my bag:rotfl::rotfl:Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0 -
I would say no Drusilla, I tried reading Raising Steam on Kindle and eventually ended up buying a copy in any case!Must use my stash up!0

I would never begrudge a woman her particular passions
especially as mine is shoes......
I did Kondo a shirt that I bought some years ago for DH in the US - wasn't the fabric I thought it was & neither of us liked it so why did it languish in the wardrobe? I did replace it today though with a CS find of a much nicer quality for him. I've managed to Kondo a few more tops as I've been packing & when I get back I'll have another go. I've realised that I can fit my gym & yoga gear into one of the plastic trugs I emptied which will release an underbed drawer and means they will be in my wardrobe instead. The Kondo magic is working although slowlySmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
I have to say I ditched all my Pratchett books a couple of weeks ago. I've read and reread them, and I loved the Watch and Wyrd Witches ones especially. I've not missed them or regretted doing it. I know the library has them and my son has the complete set at his house so I can always borrow them again. I have the Strata one left in the house (bought second hand from library) but I think that has to go in the bin as too yellowed and tatty for CS. I've ditched also to CS lots of my SF series, and Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler. I loved them all, but if I kept them I would have no room for new authors and Ive noticed that I need to try something different, I'm getting stuck in a rut.0

I have sorted my underwear drawer
Well, one of them.
And I now have a massive pile of 'other clothes' that got caught in the cross fire on my bedroom floor.
And I only got rid of one pair of underwear and about two socks
But I now have nicely folded underwear - and wow, aren't folded socks so much easier to put on in the morning?! Just bash a little roll out, pop them on, no need for the hassle of undoing them from their little bundle! Love it!
But yeah, should sort the rest out really£2023 in 2023 challenge - £17.79 January0 -
I need you lovely lot to help.
I have a bit of a dilemma. Like everyone I am trying to reduce the amount of stuff in the house. I have done books and was very pleased with the reduction as they all fit on the shelves beautifully.
I also have a Kindle- well should say had as dog killed the screen- but I can read my books on iPad until it gets replaced for my birthday (hopefully).
My dilemma is whether to release my collection of Terry Pratchett books and get them via kindle instead. I read his last book last night and was thinking about trying to make space but these books are not just books to me. They feel somewhat sentimental as they have brought so much joy. I can't decide if it is just the stories or the whole book thing. I love the feel and smell of new books and that wonderful feeling of anticipation when I get a new book to digest. I do re read books all the time if the story is a good one. I know I can get them from the library or on the kindle but...
Please help!
I 100% have a problem with books (a bigger problem than I have with clothes... and DVDs). For me the emotional connection to a book is far too strong to throw anything out that I didn't absolutely, completely and utterly hate. Heck, I've still got two copies of Jane Eyre and I did absolutely hate that book...
Anyway, as a fellow Pratchett fan I understand your dilemma. I could not - and will not - part with my books; they're my go to grab if I'm going on a journey/staying away from home over night and I dip in and out of them all the time. It's like visiting old friendshowever I do not have the full collection - probably more like 40% of it. Personally I cannot see myself ever reading Pratchett on a Kindle. Or getting rid of my copies, even The Fifth Elephant which is currently so degraded that the front cover is in two pieces and the binding is coming loose
Maybe pick three or four of your favourite ones and keep them (or get nice, new copies :j) and CS the rest?£2023 in 2023 challenge - £17.79 January0 -
Drusilla, you've answered your own question - these books spark joy in you. MK isn't about minimalism/clearing everything/empty shelves, it's about only keeping things that give you pleasure.
I still have several hundred books (at a guess). I have a Kindle and love it for travelling but I still like books. I mostly read CS books swapped with my sister or library books but I have kept reference, poetry and some books that I know I'll read again and again. They include Jane Austen, Dickens, Trollope, the complete set of Patrick O'Brien, Dorothy L Sayers, and my Georgette Heyer collection. Don't judge me. :rotfl: If my house didn't have books in every room, it wouldn't be home, it's just that now they fit on the shelves and they're all things I love.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. I'm a raving Pratchett fan although you won't find any of his works on the premises; I get mine from the library. And re-borrow and re-read as the mood strikes.
From the pov of view of availability, you should always be able to source your Pratchett fix from the vast numbers loose in the wild, but from the pov of your deep attachment to the physical books, I would suggest you keep them.
To me, the value of something is in the using of it. If you love your Pratchett books, and dive in and out of them, enjoy even the looking at them on the shelf, the collection is live and has value and should be kept. If you end up at some point in your life where they aren't being used, aren't giving you joy, and you are holding on to them out of a sense of guilt (I paid good money for these!) or a sense of obligation (I used to love these so much, but now.....:() then it's perhaps time to release them.
I felt a bit of a barbarian chucking a 65 y.o. 'The Saint' paperback into the recycling bin. It had several detached pages and was just about readable. I read it and considered it well-worth my 20p and a few hours of my time. It isn't a classic book and there are other plenty of copies extant, it would have been binned by a chazzer, but I still feel a bit guilty about releasing it back into the material stream. It'll probably be reborn as a cardboard box or egg cartons or something. What a come-down for Simon Templar!:rotfl:
I'm already feeling for the poor frontline shop staff who are going to be given grief about the bags next month. Was talking to a guy who worked at co-op (past tense, now left) about the grief they used to get over all sorts of things and how he's so glad he won't be in the Bag Wars.
I wonder why the stiff upper lips for which this country was famous, degenerated into a bunch of violently-raging adult-sized babies having temper tantrums in public? It should provide a few interesting spectacles for passers-by and far too much stress for shop-staff.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Thanks for that info wort I thought that was the case but wasnt sure.
I will either have to remember to take my bags or take loads of 5ps so think I will go for the bags
The retailers will also lose the advertising on the bags if we all take our ownSometimes when I see a lot of people carrying the same bags around I think oh must pop in that shop as it looks like they must have some good deals
So that will save me some money ;)I am a sucker for a good deal
GQ I also feel sorry for the staff when this kicks off. In the charity shop Sue R*der they have charged 5p for their bags for ages. I have seen customers in the shop refusing to buy what ever they have beacause of the charge on the bags.:o Saying no put it back I dont want it as I am not paying for a bag.
I have had to buy one of thier bags as I forgot to take mine and its a lovely bag and I have used it for my swimming bag for about a year and its still perfect and strong and does its job very well and for 5p think I have had my moneys worth time and time again :T
So if you do ever get stuck for a bag when you are out and have to buy one I can highy recommend Sues bags

Morning all
I'd say you are in the spirit of MK if you keep the books as they bring you so much joy.
Re my 'ORT' jar from the other day, DS2 couldn't find his brace box that we bought with the original black brace he wore at the beginning of his journey I didn't buy another as there are so expensive from the dentist but the retainers are quite flimsy but will cost £60+ for each part of broken!!! He only needs to wear it in bed so needed somewhere for it to live in the daytime. I've decided to empty my ORT out and use the jar, so it can live in the bathroom near his toothbrush, so it can go in at night after he's brushed and out in the morning when he gets up. That way I get to keep my pretty jar and his retainer has a permanent home when not in his mouth.
Old raggedy threads have been Kondoed, as I can't be bothered to find them a new home till spring.
Taking a spare Christmas tree to school today as one of the classes will need one at deccy time as theirs broke last year.
Also major news DHs has finally decided that he's ready to start clearing his mums garage, it's mainly full of his dad's old paints and gardening stuff, we have a couple of tip runs planned for Saturday and he's said he will break some old fence panels up to make them easier to get rid of if I empty the shelves and take them down for him to cut up. Most of the paint tins rattle as they are at least 20 years old his dad passed away 5 years ago and retired 15 years before that. The shelves are really just old planks of wood held up by the taller tins so it shouldn't be too difficult phsycally but it will be hard on DHs as he commented last night that he knows this is a job he will have to face at some point and by doing it now while his mums still here to oversee it won't be quite so hard. It will be an emotional weekend for him I think.SPC~12 ot 124
