Well ladies - I am 2/3rds of the way through the kitchen, so really pleased with what I have achieved today but now I must rest - my poor old back is killing me. There is a nice casserole bubbling away so I can put my feet up for a while and maybe look at more folding websites.

I am well and truly hooked. :D.

Now Ive always liked the results of decluttering and always found it very therapeutic but who would have thought that folding and organising could be such fun.

I'm sure there are people out there who think we are nuts but just think once we have finished and we have neat, tidy and organised houses how easy they will be to maintain.

When summer comes I shall be out on my sun lounger - I need to buy one first of course - sipping iced teas (ok make that a gin and tonic), painting my toenails and reading to my hearts content.

After the traumas of last year - husband died in August - I intend to make the most of this summer. Just hope we have plenty of sunshine.
    You certainly deserve it darling
    After what you've been through
    Angel blessings x

My name is Emg and I am a Konvert! Saw this thread and then devoured the mumsnet threads, then got the book (on Kindle, no clutter but a bit sad i cant pass it on to all the people I know who really need it!)

I have made a start on clothes today and did trousers, skirts and dresses. I chose to do those before tops as I thought I didnt have that many of these (whereas I know I have far too many tops). It turned out I had 46 items!!!!!

I've kept 2 skirts, 4 dresses, 3 prs work trousers, 3 prs shorts and 8 pairs of jeans. I know that is too many jeans but they all sparked joy by actually fitting me and looking ok! The worst thing is that I had convinced myself I had no jeans and bought two new pairs last week. I am taking them straight back, only stopping at the charity shop and the recycling bank :D

Im looking forward to not having to root through loads of clothes that I dont like or dont fit in order to find something to wear :T

Thanks! Having now watched it, I have decided life is too short to fold a thong:rotfl: Just started reading about 'essentialism' and it's really not essential for me to have my underwear so regimented!

Vertical - top to bottom of a drawer/shelf. Horizontal - edge to edge of same, is my understanding of these axis. .....doesn't seem to mean the same when it comes to storage. Liking some of the other principles though which I am going to use.

Flimsy knicks or thongs are better rolled. Fold crotch to waistband, then roll firmly from one side to the other. Store, waistband to the top, probably in a shoe-box or smaller container, to keep them together and vertical. Much more space in the drawer and pretty little sushi rolls vying for your attention each morning! :rotfl:

Vertical storing makes more efficient use of the height of the drawer. So folding t-shrts etc and 'filing' them on edge, uses less space in the drawer. Check it out on Googlr Images.

Started reading this thread last night and would love to start kondoing but as I'm living out of a suitcase in my parents spare room there's nothing to declutter, well there is, but it's not mine so though I would love to clear some of their hoard I better not. My mum has been samosaing her carrier bags a few months now but that's as far as they get. Maybe I should get the book for her to read.

Why not ask your Mum if you can clear one drawer for your own use? If you kondo the stuff in 2 drawers, just folding the stuff may leave you an empty one? You can show her the drawer with her stuff and that may just show her what she's missing! :T

  • I am working my way through chapter two of the book. I did my airing cupboard last night and now have rolls of towels and loads more space! My kids think I have gone mad lol.

Took a car load of stuff to the tip today as I am hopefully moving in three weeks so more clutter gone. My plan is to have read the book so that when we move we can kondo from the word go.

Moving is a good opportunity. ( for ANY sort out method, cull or assessment).

Pack in categories and label your boxes well. :). Will help. Still reeling at if you forget things in the category gathering it should be thrown.

I did my shoes, in the end, there was a massive storage box full of them, they are going to the cash for clothes man.

I have also folded all the carrier bags in the house into triangles.

I feel like a woman possessed. I want to throw out more!

Bought the book, nearly finished it, been inspired and have drawn a conclusion: although there are lots of fantastic ideas here (and I can't wait to get started), Marie Kondo is as "mad as a box of frogs"! Don't get me wrong she's delightfully eccentric, refreshing and speaks a lot of sense, but...

Maybe it's a cultural thing. I'm intrigued by the "storage cupboard" that seems to be in every Japanese home - it appears to be big enough to keep bookcases in! As her aim is to discard as much as possible and not stockpile, there are some tensions with frugality and saving money - although I'm sure money is saved in the long run by only buying things that "spark joy." And I'm not going to say "thank you for making me beautiful" to my lipstick but those who believe in God could thank him for his blessings or we could simply take a moment to reflect on how grateful we are for the possessions we do have. After all, de-cluttering is definitely not a problem for most of the world!

Having re-read what I've just written I must correct myself. KonMari is not "as mad as a box of frogs" - she's a sweet person with some timely and wise things to say to a world that is suffocating in stuff!

    Off to rearrange knickers... ;)
