I'm busy working my way round the house - I can't do it all in one go as I've got 2 young children (4&6) and I'm at work when they are at school. In fact I would like to Kondo their toy boxes but I think they will have other ideas ....
I think I'm being misunderstood
I know whats it's like with kids I brought mine up on my own
I just meant do as much as you can as soon as you can
You will be much better to cope when you get decluttered it ain't easy I know
Toys I've said earlier I would love mine to be little again with toys all over the floor don't rush that part of their lives it's over in a heartbeat”Pour yourself a drink, (tea for me now)
Put on some lipstick
and pull yourself together”

ETA; I hear what you say, LiR, but one in four people do live alone, and even when you share your life and your home, there are areas where you are in exclusive command of the physical space. I don't know any couples who share clothing drawers, f'rinstance.
Um, we do.Only the underwear drawer though.
Maybe that's why, even with its limitations of not enough space my individual clothes space is the most ordered space ( till DH tries to help by putting my washing away!).
But then how does tie in with keeping stuff together? Category sorting?0 -
I'm on trousers, scarves, jewellery and bras this weekend. Already got some space gaps in various areas which is exciting me! "Did" my parents tea towel drawer yesterday and proved wrong the "well they've got to take up the same amount of space however you store them" comment
Have a good kondo weekend everyone

I should explain I haven't read the book, have it on order from the library. But surely most of us category-sort naturally in terms of storage?
I wouldn't contemplate stashing my undies in the cutlery drawer, or vice versa. I keep saucepans in one cupboard and cleaning products in another cupboard. I could co-mingle them, the world wouldn't wobble on it's access, but it seems silly and counter-intuitive to do so. As would putting small items of clothing among big ones; I think I'd lose socks and knicks if they were jumbled together in the same drawer as jumpers. And it would certainly make it slower to dress and to see how many of each item I had.
By category-sorting, my understanding of the MK technique is that instead of picking away at one space (one clothing drawer, one book shelf) you do all the clothes at one time, all the books etc) and decide what to keep and what to lose, and then put it away. This is particularly helpful for those of us who have stuff of one kind in multiple spaces.
I should say in my defense that I have a very small flat (242 sq ft) and every inch of space liberated makes a noticable improvement to my quality of life. If others have more space to play with, I guess it's not so important.Besides, I've long had an interest in origami and Japan as a whole.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Glad he is helping fold washing it's more than my ex did
But really compromise and cooperation is a two way street
I had friends when I was young.
Two sisters who shared a tiny box room.
You could see who was the tidy one her side was immaculate
She even only hoovered her side of the carpet!
Then the messy sister joined the navy
Boy that must have been interesting at boot camp
All I'm saying is read the book and take from it
for instance there's no way I'm kneeling and thanking my house
But the organising part has changed my life
I'm prone to depression so the days I'm not well I can deal with better”Pour yourself a drink, (tea for me now)
Put on some lipstick
and pull yourself together”

High Force would be refreshing I think.
Once saw it frozen years ago and it was amazing:):)
Yes high force is amazing
There are some silly beggers who try to climb up it
A few have come a cropper”Pour yourself a drink, (tea for me now)
Put on some lipstick
and pull yourself together”

Never a truer word spoken!!
Im sad to say, the pesky kidder is beating me at my own game here!! Yesterday, she sorted her bathroom goodies ...... and chucked all mine over to MY side of the bath!! Guess whats getting Konned today?!!!!
Not only that, she blitzed her room and has arranged for someone to come and pick up all her black bags to take to the skip!
MUST. DO. BETTER0 -
Last evening I sorted and refolded my towels. They look so nice now.
Today I'm starting on the kitchen cupboards;)
Re shared spaces. I am currently living with my son, whilst I am househunting and I have to say he is not the tidiest person on the planet but I can see he is intrigued by the Kondo effect and its starting to rub off on him.
He has started putting his keys on the key rack, and his iPad, headphones etc on a bookshelf where I leave my gizmos. I think he is Being slowly Konverted.
Don't give up LIR, you never know........once your fAmily see the benefits of being tidy and organised they might become Konverts too.
BTW I'm loving the idea of "Guerilla Kondoing":rotfl:
Jinny - you are right. Spring is on its way and I want to get everything organised and sorted out so that when the better weather comes I can be out and about enjoying the summer and not stuck in the house spending hours on housework. Once everything is cleared and organised life it will be so much easier to keep on top of everything.0 -
Wow, I am fascinated by this, although I am probably the only person who had never heard of Marie Kondo before I read this thread.
I have come to realise that clutter is bad. It makes it impossible to clean if your house is a mess and I feel far happier if things are tidy. You can find the things you need and there is less stress in the home if things are in the right place.
As part of my decluttering process I have also come to realise that you treasure your possessions more and look after them better if you have less. I have started polishing my work shoes and looking after them because now that I have fewer pairs of shoes I appreciate their value.
But - I have done the easy bits of my home and now its getting harder. I have downloaded this book onto my kindle and I am really excited - thank you for starting the thread OP.
Oh and as for other family members. I live with a naturally untidy husband. He does try but his level of tidiness is very different to mine. I now accept this and most of the time he is happy for me to organise and tidy his things for him. I just know that I can change him so I have given up trying.
I must stop reading about this and go and get a shower and get dressed ...0 -
Any links to how to fold underwear. I looked at the T shirt one and guess what I have always done it like that !! Hadn't realised there was any other way But what is vertical storage.? 2015 is getting to grips with the stuff and clutter year for me......looking forward to the freedom it seems to bring.Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi
